Assignment 7A Los Melones

How would you describe the mood at immigration?

What quote proves your answer?

How does this prove your answer?

On the second page of the chapter what does "demeanor " mean?

What words below this line in the text prove it?

What passage would you quote in this chapter? Why?

Thanks #1000

I would say that esperanza's mood was really worried, and afraid because she was scared that mama would say something wrong, and they would have to be sent back home. This proves my answer, page 82, "esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?"
That proved my answer because I know that since mama and Esperanza were almost sneaking into the train, they both had to say the right words or else they would have to see the faces of those mean uncles. I think that "demeanor" means her reaction or expression. Page 82" mama demeanor change. She stood up straight and tall and deliberatly blotted her face with her hankercheif." The word expression also fits into the sentence. Mama's expression changed. I also think that it was VERY risky of the Ortega family to sneak away from the uncles.

I think the mood in the immigration was worried because Esperanza thought that if Mama said one wrong word, something bad could happen to them. I know this because on pg. 81 and 82 it says, "The closer Esperanza got to the front, the more nervous she became. She looked at her papers and hoped they were in order. What if the officials found something wrong? Would they send her back to her uncles? Would they arrest her and put her in jail?" This proves my answer because it tells you that Esperanza is worried that they might find something wrong with her papers and send her back to Aguascalientes. I think demeanor meant that Mama changed her attitude or that she poised to look as if she new what she was doing. The words that prove this in the next sentence are, "stood up straight and tall." One passage I would quote in this chapter is on pg.91 when it says, "She stretched out on her stomach and reached her arms to the side, hugging the earth. She let the stillness settle upon her and listened." I chose this passage because it's descriptive and I can picture Esperanza outstretches on the ground listening for the sound of the earths heartbeat. Thanks for the quote #6.

Assignment 7A Los Melones (Canteloupes) answers:
I feel Esperanza's mood at immagration would be fightened. She should feel this way. This is because she has her crazed uncles basically chasing after her! Who wouldn't be scared? The quote that proves my answer is located on page 82: "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she had said the wrong thing?" That proves how afraid she is of what's going on. This quote proves my answer because it shows how frightened she was! Of course she was afraid to speak! The word "demeanor" here means: mood. Mama went from shy and scared, to straight and tall. Therefore, her mood changed. The words that prove it are also on page 82, "She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her eyes wih a handkerchief." The passage I want to quote is on page 84. The author wrote: "Almost everyone had boarded except Alfonso, Hortensia, and Miguel. Esperanza kept looking for them, and she became more anxious with each passing minute. 'Mama, where are they?' Mama said nothing but Esperanza could see the worry in her eyes, too.
Finally, Hortensia got on. The train's engines began to chug.
Her voice tense, Esperanza said, "What happened to Alfonso and Miguel?"
Hortensia pointed out the window. "The had to find some water.'" I chose that quote because
it was intense and sent a tingle of pain down my back. This is because it left me wondering if Alfonso and Miguel were simply trying to help? If they were dying of dehydration? Et cetera. The point is, it left me wondering.
P.S. #6, you left out a lot of the assignment in your answer, just letting you know. And to thank you for the 1st quote on page 92 I put in.

The mood at immagration was impatient and worried. Esperanza was just waiting and waiting, and started to get a little annoyed. She was worried because of Mama and Esperanza were acting to get into the U.S.A. I know this because on page 82 it states,"Ezperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?" This proves my answer because she was to afraid to speak, because she might be sent back to Mexico because she said the wrong thing. Thrown in the clutches of the evil uncles. I think the word demeanor means attitude.(she changed her demeanor) Nice-Rude, Shy-serious, etc. The words that prove this is "She stood up straight nad tall,...She looked directly into the officials eyes..." That shows me she went from unsure to confident. I think a good quote to qoute would be whn Esperanza was trying to feel the Earth's heartbeat. Page 91,"She stretched out on her stomach and reached her arms to the side, hugging the earth." I think this is a creative thought from Pam Munoz Ryan.

Esperanza's mood was worried because she snuck onto the train and if they get caught they will be in a lot of trouble. I know this because on page 82 it says "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?" On the second page of the chapter, demeanor means expression because on page 82 it says "Mama's demeanor changed. She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her face with a handkerchief."

One passage I would like to quote is when Esperanza was lying on the ground trying to hear the Earth's heartbeat with tears streaming down her face with memories of Papa because it's a poignant passage and it shows how close she and Papa were. Thank # 6 and # 23 for the quotes.

At immigration I think Esperanza was scared and kind of grossed out. I think this because on page 82 it says, "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?" This proves my answer because it says she "was afraid to speak." I think demeanor in this situation means attitude and body language. The words "stood up straight and tall" proves that demeanor means attitude and body language. The part that I would quote in this chapter is on page 94 when it says, "They looked like monstrous lions' paws resting at the edge of the ridge." because it is so descriptive.

Esperanza's mood is scared because she was afraid that she would say the wrong thing. Proof of this is on page 82 where it says "Eperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?"This proves my answer becaust it tells you that she was afraid that she would say the wrong thing. I think the word "demeanor" means attitude because after that sentence it described how Mama's attitude changed. The words below this line in text that prove my answer are "She looked directly into the official's eyes and spoke calmly as if she were giving simple directions to a servant." The passage that I would quote in this chapter is "Delicate and frail, with big brown eyes, long braids, and skinny legs, she looked like a young deer. I quoted this passage because it is so descriptive and I could paint a picture in my mind of this character.

I think Esperanza's mood at the immigration was worried because she snuck onto the train and if she got caught she would be in trouble. I know this because on page 82 it states, "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing." This proves my answer because you can hear the voice in Esperanza's words and tell she's very worried. On the second page of the chapter the word demeanor means the type of expression. I know this because on page 82 it states, "Mama's demeanor changed. She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her face with a hankerchief." The words that prove this are, "She stood up straight and tall." One passage I would like to quote is when Esperanza is trying to hear the earth's heartbeat with tears running down her face. The reason I say this is because Esperanza loves Papa soooooooo much that she still thinks about all the fun activities and memories she had with him! Thank you #12 for the descriptive word "expression"!:)K

I think that Esperanza was worried at immigration because on page 82 it says "Esperanza was afraid to speak what if she said the wrong thing." (She would go right back to her evil Uncles in Aguascalientes.) I can see why she would be so worried about going back because her Uncles were so cruel to them. I think that when it said "Mama's demeanor changed" it meant that Mama's mood changed. I know it meant that her mood changed because in the next sentence it says "She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her face with a hankerchief" this proves that her mood changed because I think that Mama might of wiped her face because she was nervous and sweaty. One passage I thought was important was on page 91 when it said "She stretched out on her stomach and reached her arms to the side hugging the earth. She let the stillness settle upon her and listened. She heard nothing" Then a few paragraphs later on page 92 it said "I can't hear it! She pounded the earth. Let me hear it. Tears burst from her eyes as if someone had squeezed an overripe orange" this showed that Esperanza was sad and really missed her Papa.

I could decribe the mood at imigration as woried and frightend. I think this because on pg.82 it says, "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?" This proves my answer because in this quote she is afraid. I think the word "demeanor" means attituide. I think this because on pg.82 it says, "Mama's demeanor changed she stood striaght and tall."

I would describe the mood at immigration as angry, moody and a person that seems as if they have no life. I know this because on page 82 it says " The immigration ofical seemed angry for no reason." That prooves he is angry, moody and has nothing better to do than be angry at people so that prooves he has no life. I think demeanor means your stance and your mood. So if I changed my demeanor I would change my mood and stance. I know this because on page 82 it says "Mamas demeanor changed. She stood up straight and tall and deliberatly blotted her face with a hankerchief." One passage I would quote in this chapter is on page 84 it says "Mama where are the? Mama said nothing but Esperanza could still see worry in her eyes." I quote this because it is the beging of the susspence what happend to Alfonso and Miguel did the get sent back to Mexico or did they miss the train.

I would describe the mood at immigration as scary. On page 82 the quote proves this by saying, " And what is your purpose for entering the United States?" Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?" This proves my answer by showing Esperanza's fear. On the second page of the chapter, demeanor means to " A person's general conduct toward others; a person's general behavior"(definition) The line below prove this by saying, "Mama's demeanor changed. She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her face with a handkerchief." A passage I would quote in this chapter is the description of the arroyo because the details are very good and paint a picture in my mind.

I think Esperanza's mood at the immigration building was worried because if Mama said something wrong they could be in trouble. I know this because on Pg. 81 and 82 it says, "The closer Esperanza got to the front, the more nervous she became. She looked at her papers and hoped they were in order. What if the officials found something wrong? Would they send her back to her uncles? would they arrest her and put her in jail? This proves my answer because when she gets to the front there going to ask for paperwork but they don't have it because they're not from the USA. I think demeanor means emotion or feeling. Some words that could prove it are that Pg.82"She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her face with a handkerchief." Those are the words that I think describe demeanor. Pg.94 " They looked like monstrous lions paws resting at the edge of a ridge." I quote this passage because it's really descriptive and I can really picture it.

The mood at immigration was afraid. I think this because on pg 82 it says, "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?" This proves my answer because it said she was afraid. On the second page of the chapter demeanor means like the way mama changed her behavior. Thw words in the second line that prove this are, "She stood up straight and tall and delibrately blotted her face with a hankerchief." (pg 82). The passage I would quote is on page 84-85,"Esperanza wanted to be angry at them for making her anxious. She wanted to yell at them for waiting until the very last minute just so they could find water for their package that was probably nonsense anyway. But looking from one to the other, she sat back, limp with relief, happy to have them all toghther surrounding her, and surprised that she could be so glad to be back on the train."

I think that Esperanza's mood at immigration is very frighted and worried. I know this because on page 82 it states, "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?" This proves my answer because she is worried that she will give away too much information. She is frightened because if she tells the guard the wrong thing he could send them back or inform Tio Luis. I think demeanor means attitude and body moments because the sentence was showing how her body movement changed. On page 82 I read, " Mama's demeanor changed. She stood up straight and tall." I would like to quote, Below, the canyons plunged to an arroyo, a silver line of water from an unknown river. It was quiet and peaceful here, the sweet silence broken only by the swish of dried grasses from the wind." I chose this quote because when I read it, I felt like I was there looking down at the beautiful canyons and rivers. To me, it was an extremely descriptive quote.

The mood of the immagration is worried by far.On page 81 and 82 it says, "The closer Esperanza got to the front, the more nervous she became. She looked at her papers and hoped they were in order. What if the officials found something wrong? Would they send her back to her uncles? Would they arrest her and put her in jail?"It is quite frightening and worrying going through customs the first time. There are two scary looking cops with trench guns who you think if you have incorrect papers are going to hall you right to jail.I knew my papers where in order but she knew that they where fake and was as said above horrifyed and worried.I belive demeanor means attitude.I know this because on page 82 it said,"She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her eyes wih a handkerchief."I would quote the passage on page 91,"Almost everyone had boarded except Alfonso, Hortensia, and Miguel.
"The had to find some water." I chose this because it is intense and that is my prefered type of book.

I would say that Esperanza's mood was very worried because she was worried that mama would say the wrong thing and they would have to go back to Mexico. I know this because on page 82 it says, "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing." This proves my answer because they both were trying to sneak into the train past immigration. They were scared that Tio Luis and Tio Marco would find them and send them back to Mexico or put them in jail. Demeanor means to change your attitude and to stand up for your self and to stay tall and strong. The words on the text line says, "She stood up straight and tall and deliberatly blotted her face with a handkerchief." I would quote the words that I just quoted because it is good proof and shows respectfulness, guts, and strength.

I think the mood at immigration is mostly two things: suspensful and sad. I think it was suspensful because Mama and Esparanza were waiting in line for the cruel offical to let them pass and he could of rejected them like he did to others. It is sad because people actually came all that way for work and were sent- no questions asked- all the way back! I know this because on page 82 and 83 it says," The immigration official seemed angry for no reason. Where are you from? We are from Aguascalientes, said Mama, stepping forward. And what is your purpose for entering the United States? Esparanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing? To work, said Mama, handing him her documents as well... Finally, he grabbed the stamp and pounded each page with the words Mexican National... My heart aches for those people. They came all this way just to be sent back, said Mama." This proves my answer because it has both suspense and sadness in it. I think "Demeanor"-(on page 82) means that she seemed to change her attitude and her body language so that the mean guy new that she was determinded to get to that train! The line afer that word proves my answer because it says the "she stood up straight and tall" I that probably made her look more confident than she was before. I would quote the passage that says that she was trying to hear the earth's heart beating again because she wondered if Papa's sound could still be heard and sadly, it couldn't.

I would say that Esperanza's mood during the immigration was scared and worried because on pg 81-82 it says"What if the officials found something wrong? Would they send her back to her uncles?
This proves my answer because it shows Esperanza was thinking about what would happen if she didn't make it through the immigration.
Demaenor means attitude the words that prove it are"She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her face with a hankerchief."
the passage in this chapter I would quote is the one were mama is talking to the official because it has descriptive words like demeanor. nice job everyone.

I would desribe the mood at the immigration center is very tense. A quote to prove my answer would be on page 82 it says, "Mama's demeanor changed. She stood up straight and tall and looked into the officials eye's." I think in this chapter means stature, body language and opoinion.I know this because on page 82 it says, "She looked directly in to the official's eye's and spoke calmly." A poingaint passage to quote would be on when Ezpo listens to try to hear the earht's heart but she can't so then she throws a tantrum.

I would describe the mood at immigration worried because Esperanza is all worried that she will not be rich any more. I know this because on page 67 it says ""Mama," said esperanza, stopping in the door way "We cannot travel in this car. It...it is not clean." this proves that esperanza is worried that she might get dirty. The word demeanor means she changed her look and attitud. the words that prove this on the line below read "she stood up and tall and deliberatly bloted her face with a hanker chief." this made the gaurd she was talking to uneasy. One passage I had to qoute was on page 85 it says "She sat up groggily, barely opening her eyes." i qouted this passage because it use a good discriptve word Groggily. and it made me look it up in the dictionary, but it did not have a defintion.

I would say that the mood in immigration was worried, Esperanza was worried because she thought that if mama made one wrong word they would be in trouble and probably sent back home. And this quote proves my answer on pg 82 it says "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?"
That proves my answer because they were nearly sneaking into the train and into America. So if they said one word wrong they would go back to the uncles and live a bad life. I think "demeanor" means a change in a person's expression. Because of this it says that on pg 82 " Mama's demeanor changed. she stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her face with a handkerchief." one passage i would quote would be on pg 94 it said " flat and spacious, it spread out like a blanket of patchwork fields." I choose that because it was very descriptive.

The overall mood at immigration was impatient, frustrated, and frightened. People working at immigration seemed to be unhappy with working there. A quote that would prove my answer was on page 82, "The immigration officer seemed angry for no reason." They did not treat the people they worked with well, and they always were angry at people who didn't answer their questions fast enough. The people going through immigration were scared, because they didn't know if they would be allowed through or if any fake papers they had would be discovered. There was a risk that they would be sent home or separated from their family. A quote proving that everyone was frightened is on page 82, "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?" The mood at immigration was unwelcoming to say the least. At immigration Mama's demeanor changed, which I believe means that her behavior and body language changed. I think this because in the same paragraph it talks about how Mama's stature changed and how she suddenly seemed a lot braver and sure of herself. Some words below this line in the text that support my answer are; straight, stood up, tall, deliberately, calmly, and directly. Before Mama was acting very timid, but when her demeanor changed she acted very differently, which leads me to think my answer is right. If I could quote any passage in this chapter it would be "...Seeing nothing but the vast sky in dizzying swirls of blue and white, she began to feel as if she were floating and drifting upward. She lifted higher and part of her liked the sensation but another part felt untethered and frightened..." because I really think that it embodies the story perfectly. It represents the title "Esperanza Rising" because it shows Esperanza rising. She wasn't really floating, it was a metaphor for her life and how she is rising above what she was before. To me that is one of the most important and powerful parts of the book.

A mood that describes immagration is the peopel at the time were afraid. I know this because on page 82 it says"Esperanza was afraid to speak. What happend if she said the wrong thing?" So this just goes to show that too many people were afraid to stan up and speak there backround and who they were. The word "demeanor" means reaction or mood. On page 82 mama demanor change. She stood up right to the man at the front desk.

I think that a word to describe the mood at immigration would be nervous and scared because on page 81-82 it says,"The closer Esperanza got to the front, the more nervous she became. She looked at her papers and hoped they were in order. What if the officials found something wrong? Would they send her back to her uncles? Would they arrest her and put her in jail?" This proves my answer because if they said one wrong thing then they would go back and live with their uncles. I think the word "Demeanor" means your mood because on page 82 it says,"Mama's Demeanor changed. She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her face with a handkerchief." The passage that I would quote on Page 84 is,"Almost everyone had boarded except Alfonso, Hortensia, and Miguel. I think that Esperanza's mood at the immagration was worried. I think this because, on page 81/82 Esperanza says,"The closer Esperanza got to the front, the more nervous she got. That proves my answer because, Esperanza was wondering what would happen to them if the officials found something wrong. Also it even says in the script that the closer they got the more nervous she got.
I think demeanor ment, mood because, mama went from shy and sitting down to confident and standing high. The words that prove this below are "Stood up straight and tall." and,"She looked dirrectly into the official's eyes."
One passage I would quote is when Esperanza opened her arms and tried to hear the hear beat of the earth. I picked this quote because, I could easily picture this. Also that back where Esperanza used to live she could hear the beat but not hear.

The mood at immigration was depressed and tired. I think this becuase on page 81 it says "Esperanza and Mama, their faces shiny with grime and perspiration, looked tired and wilted with even the slight weight of their valises. " This proves my answer because it says they felt tired an wilted. Demeanor means that Mama's expression changed along with her posture. This makes it seem like Mama regained her strength and did what she had to do. The words below that prove my answer are, "She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her face with a hankerchief." the passage I would quote from this chapter is "Isabel was so happy, she thought, about such little things. " I quote this because it shows that Esperanza has still not realized how poor she is and she is n't being grateful. It also shows how little Isabel has.

Some words in the text that prove my answer are straight and tall. I would quote the passage"Finally, he grabbed the stamp and each page with the words Mexican National." I think Espranza was scared at the immigration bcause it says in th book "Sh lookd at the papers and hopd they were in order. What if the officals found something wrong?would they send her back to her uncles?would they arrest her and put her in jail?" This shows that Esperanza was scared because sh had so many questions that worried her.I think demnor mean her expression because it says "mamas demanor changed.she stoud up straight and tall" so she changed hr expression to look more serious.I pick the quote when esperanza was tryin to hear the heartbeat i can imanied sing her so upset becaus it only worked when papa was there.

I would say that Esperanzas mood is really worried because she does not want to say something wrong. I know this because on page 82 it says " Esperanza was afraid to speak. what if she said something wrong".This proved my answer because I know this because Mama and Esperanza was sneaking on the train and they had to say the right words or they had to see those uncles again. I think deamnor means that her mood changes. In the book mama's deamnor went from nervous to calm. The word in the text that descibe her deamnor was calmly. The passage I would qoute in this chapter would be " Esperanza nodded and tried to smile back. Isabel was so happy, she thought , about such little things". This shows that Esperanza did not notice how much she got and how little Isabel got like she did not even start school and Esperanza is already in grade 8.

The mood at immigration is scared and impatient. Everyone just wants to get their papers approved then leave. Also scared because what happens if their papers don't get approved they don't know. I got scared because on page 81 and 82 it says,"What if the officials found something wrong? Would they send her back to her uncles? Would they arrest her and put her in jail?" This proves that she was scared that her papers might not be approve. She defintly does not want to go back to her uncles or go to jail. I think the world demeanor means changed. Mama changed her additude, how she stood, and she got braver. I got this because it talks about how she changed below. The passage I would quote is from page 98 and it says, "We are all seperate and work seprate. They do not mix us. They don't want us banding together for higher wages or better housing." I choose this quote because it is kind of mean to seperate people expessilly when it is by diffrent skin toon, or if they grew up someplace diffrent. I can also see why they do seperate people, they don't want them to go on strike. If they do the camp won't make any money.

Esperanzas mood is scared and nervous because when they were on the train she was scared that she or mama was going to say something wrong because on page 82 it says" Esperanza was affraid to speak. what if she said the wrong thing." This proves my answer because if some one was not nervous and scared these things would not be racing through their head. I think demeanor means her tone and body language. i think she changed her demeanor because if she comes across as unsure the people will relize that she is a faker and send her back. The words that prove it is "mamas demeanor changed. she stood up straight and tall and deliberty. she looked into the officals eyes and talked like she was giving orders to the servents. If i could quote one passage it would be " my heart ackes for thoes people. they came all the way here to get sent back."said mama. I choose this because it shows that even though they are poor they still care for other people that are like the same as them not like ohh i am living like you so you can just go on with your life. they actully care for them.

The mood at immigration was mostly angry and irritated. The qoute that proves my answer is on page #82 and it says,"The immigration official seemed angry for no reason."This proves that the official is angry which makes everyone else angry and irritated at him.I think that the word demeanor means how you appear to someone. An example would be if someone had a mean demeanor, then they would appear to be a mean person.Words from the text that prove my answer are on page 82 it says,"She stood up striaght and tall and deliberately blotted her face with a handkerchief."This shows that Mama is appearing more threataning to the official and she is giving the impression that even though she is a woman, she will stand up for herself and her family and she's not afraid of him just because he's a man.One passage I would qoute from this chapter is on page 83, it says,"'My heart aches for those people. They came all this way just to get sent back'said Mama."I would qoute this because I feel like if I was in Mama's situation, I would maybe try to help the people just a little without endangering my friends and family. I like to think I would.

1) I think the mood was worried because Esperanza was worried that something bad would happen and that she would be sent back to Mexico.
2) I think this because on page 82 it says, "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing?"
3) I think demeanor means to change.
4) I think this because on page 82 it says, "Mama's demeanor changed. She stood up tall and deliberately blotted her face with a handkerchief."
5) On page 87 it says, "The vehicle looked like it should be hauling animals instead of people, but Esperanza had said nothing to mama." This is the passage I would quote because Esperanza finaly gets that her life will be harder now.

I would describe he mood at immigration as irritated and as commanding. A quote that would prove this would be "The immigration official seemed angry for no reason." and " She stood up straight and tall..... She looked calmly into the officials eyes and spoke calmly as if she was giving simple directions to the servant."
a quote that is important in this passage is "... he fought in the mexican revolution against people like her father who owned all the land." I think this is important because it shows Marta's prejudice towards the rich. It also was very insensitive to Esparanzas recent loss because she is still unused to the grief.

oh and sorry: Demeanor in this sentence probably means a change of attitude and tone.

I would describe the mood as nervous at immigration. I would describe it that way because on page 81 it says,"The closer Esperanza got to the front, the more nervous she became. She looked at her papers and hoped they were in order. What if...". This shows that Esperanza was nervous, because it says so.
I think the word "demeanor" means expression. I think this because undeneath it it says,"..she deliberately blottted her face with a hankercheif. She looked directly into the officer's eyes, and spoke calmly..." The author wouldn't have put that part in if Mama had not been doing something completly different before.
I would quote the passage; "She listened again, but heatbeat was not there. She tried one more time, desperately wanting to hear it. But there was no reassuring thump repeating itself. No sound of the earth's heartbeat. Or of Papa's." I would quote this because this shows that no matter how stubbornly she refused to beleive her state she was in, this place was different from her old life. That is a relief.

1) I would describe the mood at the immigration place as a very lucky and unlucky place because you could have the right papers and get to go to America or have the wrong papers and be sent back. Also you could actinically say the wrong thing.
2) A quote that proves my answer is on 81 and 82 it says, "The closer Esperanza got to the front, the more nervous she became. She looked at her papers and hoped they were in order. What if the officials found something wrong? Would they send her back to her uncle’s? Would they arrest her and put her in jail?"
3) I think demeanor means mood and how you act. A quote to support my answer is on page 82" mama demeanor change. She stood up straight and tall and deliberately blotted her face with her handkerchief." “That shows that it meant mama change her mood. Blotted her face with her handkerchief."

I would describe the mood of the immigration as angry because they all were under frustation and wanted everyone to have the right paper. I know this because on page 82 it says the immigration official seemed angry for no reason. This proves my answer because it shows how angry he was. I think demeanor means that your mood changes. I think this because when the official demanded to know what work she was going to do in the united states it said on page 82 Mama's demeanor changed. She stood up straight and tall and deiberty blotted her face with a handkerchief. I think a good quote would be when she is thinking about the time when her father was talking to her and tellling her about hearing the earth beat I think she is trying t remind herself of papa.

I would describe the mood of immigration as nervous or fustrated.A quote that would prove the mood being nervous is "The closer Esperanza got to the front, the more nervous she became. What if the officials found something wrong?Would they send her back to her uncles?Would they arrest her and put her in jail?"This proves my answer because it actually says "the closer Esperanza got to the front, the more nervous she became."A quote that would prove the mood of immigration for frustrated is when Mama said"My heart aches for these people. They came all this way just to be sent back."This quote proves my answer because anyone who traveled for days on a train would and their papers got turned down would be fusterated. They would be fusterated because they would have to go through the long train ride again without acomplishing anything. On the second page of the chapter demeanor means a way of behaving in front of someone else. Mama's demeanor changed in front of the immigration official. She "stood up straight and tall... She looked directly into his eyes and spoke calmly as if she were giving simple directions to a servant...standing proud and tall." Mama shows her strength and the official lets them into the country. The passage I would quote is on page 93
where Miquel comforts Anza (as he calls her). "And this time, Esperanza did not let go of Miguel's hand." This quote shows that they are now on the same side of the river.

I think that the mood durning the immigration was worried. I think this because on pg. 82 it says, "Esperanza was afraid to speak. What if she said the wrong thing." This proved my answer because in the quote it says that she was afraid to speak so that shows me that she was worried. I think demeanor means expression. I think this because on page 82 it says, "Mama stood up straight and tall." The word fits this sentence because she went from being sort of sagging to standing up straight and tall.
