The problem surrounding the title is that Lupe and Pepe are little babies, and babies don't eat raw plums. Guess what Esperanza did, she fed them raw plums. Thank goodness she thought about the rice water that Hortensia gave her whenever she was sick!!She gave the babies rice water and they were feeling better in no time. What caught my attention in this chapter was that when Isabel burst through the front door during the storm and worried about her cat. She could have asked is everyone alright. Instead she cared about her cat. The problem with mama is that she caught valley Fever which takes about six months to recover from. Mama got Valley fever by the dust storm. It is a disease that some people havve when they just moved into the area and are not use to dust storms. The dust spores flew into Mama's lungs and gave her an infection. Esperanza is really worried, she doesn't want to lose Mama too! Page 157
"She wanted to tell the docter she could not loose Mama, too. That she had already lost Papa and Abuelita was too far away."

The problem surrounding the title, Plums, is that Esperanza feeds Lupe and Pepe plums and then the babies stomachs began to hurt. Luckily, Esperanza remembered that Hortensia gave her rice water when her stomach was feeling bad in Mexico and she made rice water and gave it to the babies. The babies felt better after they drank it. What caught my attention about the dust storm is that it sent blasts of hot wind so powerful that it could take a flour sack right out of someones hands. I know this because on pg.147 it says, "A sudden blast of hot wind took the flour sack from Irene's hand and carried it to the fields." Mama's problem in the chapter is that she has a coughing spasm and keeps getting iller. I think the dust storm caused this problem because on pg.153 it says, "And Mama. Mama had changed. Because after the storm, she never stopped coughing." As a result, Esperanza goes to the hospital with Mama and at the hospital the doctor says it could take a while for Mama to heal and that she could die. I think Esperanza will try to contact Abuelita because now that Mama's terribly sick, Esperanza might think that Abuelita needs to know. I wonder if the Uncles are ferocious that they ran away or that they really don't care.

The problem srounding this title is that since the babies cant eat raw plums yet tthey get sick when esperansa feeds one to them. But then she saved the day and made rice water and then the babies where fin than god.One thing that caught my atention is when isabel burst through the door AND ALL SHE COULD THINK ABOUT IS HER LITTLE CAT!!not that it is not important.BUT BE SERIOUS WHAT ABOUT YOUR MOTHER AND FATHER,THE BABIES AND ESPEREANZA!!!The problem that happeds with mama acfter the dust storm is that she got sick and just keeps working to help her family. But when mama gets worse she is moved to the hospital and her relashonship with Esperanza is getting to keep together. The cause of mama getting sick is when microsopic particals of dust sneek into mamas lungs, during the dust storm,an dgiv her vally fever.you get vally fever from fungi in the dirt that eratates your lunds and make it hard to breath.

The problem surounding the title is that Esperanza fed the babies raw plums. I was surprised that the dust storm was strong enough to turn the cat all brown. Mama's problem was that she got sick. This was caused by dust spores in the air. Esperanza is sad because Mama could die. I know this because on pg.157 it says, "She wanted to tell the doctor that she couldn't lose Mama too."

There is a problem surrounding the title of this chapter. This chapter is labeled Las Clruelas (Plums);and since Esperanza is SO hopeless, guess what she has done this time??? She fed Lupe and Pepe plums!!!They're tiny baies! Babies can really only digest some foods...and obviously plums do NOT qualify for this special diet!!! Raw plums...RAW! Luckily, she remembered a bit of her childhood; this just means she remembered to give the babies rice water and the babies were immediately feeling healthy again.
It was odd when the dust storm occured. This is because Isabel broke through the door and was worried sick about her cat insted of her friends and those look out for her and care for her. Not that I blame her for worrying about her cat, I mean, I'd be upset too! Still, she could have first asked, "Is everyone alright?"
Mama's problem was that she was unfortunately suffering from Valley Fever. So, I dissagree with #6 minorly. Her cat is obviously important to her, and I admire how much she cares about it. This is hard on Anza, but her mother will most likely take 6 months to recover. The dust must have gotten to her. I'm pretty sure she is allergic. Anza is actually caring a lot about her mother.
I predict Anza will begin to show some love and respect for people other than herself! My prediction basically proves what is going on with Anza.
Thanks #6!

The problem surrounding this title is that Pepe and Lupe's stomaches can't handle raw plums. Esperanza apparently didn't know that and fed them to the babies! After, Esperanza did the right thing to feed them the rice water mix. She had remembered this when Hortensia had done it for her. What catches my attention about the dust storm is that it lasted so long, and that Esperanza was rising up from her mistakes and selfishness. I think this because she was finally worried and was caring about Miguel and Alfonso. Before, she only cared about mama. Mama's problem in this chapter was that she got Valley Fever from the dust storm. A terrible desease. I know this because on page 155 it states, ""She has Valley Fever." "What does that mean?" asked Esperanza. "It's a disease of the lungs that is caused by dust spores." As a result Esperanza is afraid that Mama will die too. I know this because on page 157 it states, "She wanted to tell the docter she could not loose Mama, too. That she had already lost Papa and Abuelita was too far away." Thanks #6 for the quote.

The problem surrounding this title is that the title is called Las Ciruelas -(plums)-. Guess what Esperanza did this time... She fed Pepe and Lupe PLUMS. I mean for crying out loud babies can't digest PLUMS!!! Thank goodness that Esperanza remembered what Hortensia did in this type of situation; feed the babies rice water. What suprised me about the dust storm is that it can go on for hours and hours. The proof of this statement is on page 149 when it states, "How long will it last?" asked Esperanza. "Sometimes hours," said Irene. "The wind will stop first. And then the dust." Mama's problem in this chapter is that she gets a horrible fever called "Valley Fever." What caused this problem is that little dust spores from the storm got into Mama's lungs and spread chemicals in her body causing symptoms like coughing and sneezing. I know this because on page 155 it states, "It's a disease of the lungs that is caused by dust spores. Sometimes, when people move to this area and aren't used to the air here, the dust spores get into their lungs and cause infection." As a result Esperanza is distressed, botherd and nervous because she dosen't want Mama to die!!! One guestion I have is will Mama surive this "Valley Fever" disease??

The problem surrounding the title that Esperanza feedes Lupe and Pepe plums and their stomachs start to hurt. But Esperanza remembered when she was sick Hortensia fed her rice. What caught my attention about the dust storm was that it was so long and strong. On Pg.147 it says, "What's happening? Esperanza asked. A dust storm, like nothing you have seen before said Melina. They are awful" I think that Mama's problem in this chapter is that after the dust storm she gets very ill. I know this because on page 153 it says, "Mama you're so pale! said Esperanza. Mama carefully walked into the cabin as if she were trying to keep her balance, and slumped into a chair in the kitchen. Hortensia was bustling behind her. I am going to make you some chicken soup with lots of garlic." When I read that passage I knew right away that she was sick. I know that she got sick from the dust storm because on page 153 it says, "and Mama. Mama had changed. Because after the storm, she never stopped coughing. As a result Esperanza goes to the hospital with Mama. I think Mama might die because on page 157 it says, "She wanted to tell the doctor that she could not lose Mama too. That she had already lost Papa and Abuelita was too far away. Her voice strangled with fear. All she could do was whisper the doctor's uncertain words, If she survives.

The problem surrounding this title is that babies can't eat raw plums. Esperanza, of course, wasn't thinking about what Isabel said and fed them plums. (that seems like Esperanza, careless at times)The part that caught my attention about the dust storm was when Mama, Hortensia, Alfonso, Miguel, Josephina, and Juan did not come back. What also caught my attention was when Isabel was only worried about her stupid cat.(If anybody owns a cat here, I hope I didn't offend you.) I mean Esperanza has had no experiences with dust storms, and Isabel can only worry about her cat? Come on Isabel!!! Show some feeling!!! Even the stuck-up Esperanza worried about other people!!! Mama's problem in this chapter is she caught a disease called Valley Fever. This is when dust spores get caught in the lungs and can cause infection. This is caused by the dust storm that Mama wasn't used to. As a result, Esperanza gets worried about Mama's life. I know this because on page 157 it says,"She wanted to tell the doctoer she could not lose Mama too. She had already lost Papa, and Abuelita was to far away." That shows me that she will never forgive her life for losing Mama and Papa.(If Mama dies)

The problem surrounding the title is that the baby's can't eat raw plums. So Esperanza fed the baby's the raw plums accidentally. What caught my attention in the chapter is that some dust storms can last a couple of hours.I know this because on page ?(I forgot my book) Isabell says, "some sand storms can last for hours." Mama's problem in the chapter is that mama was getting a very bad fever called a valley fever. What caused this problem was that the little dust spores got in mama's lungs and got all around her body and then she got the fever. As a result Esperanza is affraid that her mama might die. Esperanza already lost her father and did not want to lose her mother. I know this because the docter said she could die.

The problem surrounding this Title is Espeanza fed Lupe and Pepe raw plums not knowing babies can't have raw plums. Luckily Esperaza remembered that when she was a baby, Hortensia made her rice water to make her feel better. What caught my attention in this chapter is that even though a lot of people got stuck in the sand storm, only Mama got sick. Mama's problem in this chapter is she gets very sick from the sandstorm because dust spores got in her lungs. I know this because on page 155 where it says "Sometimes, when people move to this area and aren't used to the air here, the dust spores get into their lungs and cause an infection." As a result, Esperanza gets closer to Mama because she is so worried for her. Proof of this is on page 155 where it says "Esperanza could not sit still. She paced near the bedroom door, trying to hear what was going on." This proves that Esperanza is worried because when she is trying to hear what is going on, I know she is worried about Mama.

The problem surrounding the chapter is that Esperanza fed Lupe and Pepe raw plums and the babies' stomachs began to hurt, but luckily she remembered an old remedy Hortensia gave her when she was abut to puke, back on the ranch. So Esperanza fed the babies some rice water and there was no more potential for baby barf. I guess there was no pepto bismal in a 1930's migrant work camp. I noticed that right when Isabella came into the cabin, she wanted to know where the cat was. She could've worried about if her family and friends were alright, but NO! She worried about the darn FELINE!!! Hey, cats are (somewhat) expendable, people aren't. I have to cut her a little bit of slack, it's hard to lose a pet you love, and believe me, I know all about it considering I lost two, count them, two dogs in the span of eight months. Mama's problem in the chapter is that see comes down with valley fever from the dust storm and Esperanza is afraid that she will lose Mama and "she had already lost Papa and Abuelita was too far away" (p. 157) in her time of pain. Thanks #6 for the quote.

The problem that had to do with this chapter title is when Esperanza fed raw plums to Pepe and Lupe without knowing the plums had to be cooked. It caught my attention that the wind was not strong enough to damage the cabin. The problem with Mama in this chapter is that she got Valley Fever. Inhaling sand caused Valley Fever. As a result, Esperanza is really sad because of what the doctor said: "There are some medicines she can take, but even then, if she survives, it might take six months for her to get her full strength back." (page 157) I would be sad too if a doctor said, "if she survives" about my mom.

The problem surrounding this title is called "Plums" because the two babies got an upset stomachs. What caught my attention about the dust storm is that Mama was oustside during the storm. Mama's problem in this chapter is that she gets sick from inhaling the dust. The dust caused this problem because it affected Mama's lungs. As a result, Esperanza gets very worried about her sick mother. I know this because on page 155 it says, "Esperanza could not sit still. She paced near the bedroom door, trying to hear what was going on inside."

The problem surrounding this title-(Las Ciruelas-Plums)-is that, while Esparanza is left babysitting Lupe and Pepe, she accidentally feeds them raw plums-(which babys aren't supposed to be fed unless they are cooked)-and they get sick and have the runs. But it still isn't Esparanza's falt that she didn't know not to feed them raw plums! I wouldn't know so STOP BLAMING HER, ISABEL!!!
Anyway, what caught my attention about the dust storm is that only Mama was badly effected by the dust and no was else was. (That can be found on page 155). Well, I practically stated Mama's problem in this chapter but, the doctor also said the words "if she survives"-(thanks to #4 for that)-and that means Mama could die! MAMA COULD DIE!!! What caused this problem is that the awful dust storm just HAD-TO occur at such a WONDERFUL time! (I was sarcastic). As a result, Esparanza is devastated and I don't BLAME her! What a HORRIBLE time! I know this because on page 157 it says," She wanted to tell the doctor that she could not lose Mama, too. That she had already lost Papa and that Abuelita was too far away. her voice strangled with fear. All she could do was whisper the doctor's uncertain words,'If she survives.'"

I want to say that those last sentences really stuck to me but even that wouldn't be enough to describe how I'm feeling about this story. Basically, I'm devestated- just like Esparanza.:(

The problem surrounding this title is that Esperanza gives Lupe and Pepe raw plums and they get sick. Something that caught my attention about the dust storm was that the dust could break through a window. It states this on page 148 when it says "the dirt and wind can break the glass." The problem Mama had in this chapter is that she got Valley Fever. It states this on page 155 when it says "She has Valley Fever." Mama got this disease because of swallowing dust spores during the dust storm. It states this on page 155 when it says "It's a disease of the lungs that is caused by dust spores. Sometimes when people move to this area and aren't used to the air here the dust spores get into their lungs and cause an infection." As a result Esperanza felt sad because she had already lost her Papa and she didn't want to loose her other parent as well. It states that Esperanza was sad on page 157 it says "She felt the blood drain from her face. She wanted to tell the doctor that she could not loose Mama too.

Hey everyone! I'm wopndering how Esperanza might react if he mama dies? WIll she stay positive and caring or will she turn sour and hateful?

Are we seeing character development in Esperanza in this chapter?

Are we seeing further development of the plot by Pam Munoz Ryan or is the story stalled?

HOw would it feel to be in a dust storm?

Nice work everyone. Remember full points only go to those with quotes!

Thanks for these questions Mr.Chugg!

I'll answer the first and second ones below:
1.Esperanza will feel trapped, frightened and just flat out alone!
She's already lost one of her favorite people...she cannot afford to lose Mama too!

2. Esperanza has matured SO much over this past chapter. I was feeling pretty impressed, actually!
Shes actually started to care for other people more, especially since the dust storm occured.

I guess I'll answer the 3rd while I'm at it:

3. Honestly, I feel like Pam Munoz Ryan has gotten more into her writing! She has thrown in small events that sure have created a whole new feel to this story!

Okay I might aswell answer the 4th (last one) too!:
4. I'd feel very overwhelmed in a dust storm. I'd easily grow dizzy, and maybe even pass out. Anyway, it could cause a serious headache, and probably some minor permanent damage. I took this knowledge based on seeing some pictures of Californian dust storms on GoogleImageSearch.
Great job everyody!

The problem in the title of this chapter is plums which Esperanza feeds to the babies, and they cant eat raw plums only cooked plums. At least Esperanza actualy made herself useful and gave them rice water. My attention was caught by the fact its a dust storm people are flying through the sky and in comes Isabel "Where is my CAT!!!!!"For all she knows alfonso could be on top of a house Miguel so sandy and dusty he looks like a sand monster and she is more scared for the life of a cat.The problem is that Mama has conducted valley fever. This is bad because if mama goes Esperanza will have a life filled with sadness and poverty.Mama got this sickness because she got dust spores on her lungs and is not used to it. Esperanza is quite worried because as i said above "if mama goes Esperanza will have a life filled with sadness and poverty." and it shows this on page 157
"She wanted to tell the docter she could not lose Mama, too. That she had already lost Papa and Abuelita was too far away."

The problem about the chapter is that Pepe and Lupe are still bebies and cannot eat raw plums. I know this because on pg 143 it says, "Oh, Esperanza, they are too young for raw plums! Everyone knows that plums must be cooked for babies,' said Isabel" What caught my attention about the dust storm was simply that it happened. I was really not expecting it to happen. But besides that I didn't know that a dust storm could last for hours. I learned this on pg 149 it says, "How long does last?' asked Esperanza. 'Sometimes hours,' said Irene." Mamas problem in the chapter was that she got sick. She got sick because of working when the dust storm happened and inhaling (not sure I spelled that right) dust spores. As a result Esperanza has a lot more to worry about and going from fairly happy to i hate this place where why in the world did all this have to happen.

Esperanza would probably turn sour and hateful if Mama dies because she is kind of selfish and if she dosent have anyone she will become more selfish. Yep, I think Esperanza at this point is developing because she is learning she is becoming more self-depedent with the knowlege she has learned in her new home. I think Pam Munoz Ryan is advancing the story because I think she is setting it up so that Mama probably dies and then what happens to Esperanza. It would feel very scary to be in a dust storm because you could get hurt from inhaling to much dust, like mama. Sorry I typed all this I know I will probably drive some of you crazy when we read this. Sorry!!!!

Plums are the problem because they made the babies feel sick. One thing that caught my attion about the dust storm is it semed to get going very quickly like a flash flood but with wind and sand.Mama's problem in this chapter is she got vally fever I know this because on page 151 it says "she has vally fever." I think the dust storm caused this problem. Esperanzas problem is she goes into a panic once the docter said if she survies. I know this because on page 157 it says " There are some medicin she can take if she survives" Then it says She wanted to tell the docter that she can not lose mamam, too. The problem in surounding the title of the chapter Las Ciruelas (plums) is that Ezpo fed Pepe and Lupe raw plums and this made them sick. What caught my attention in the chapter was that Ezpo actually fixed her mistake. Mama's chapter is that her "Valley Fever" is getting worse so she now has to stay at a different hospital for patients with longer term illneses. The dust storm caused this because the small particles entered her lungs and caused an infection. As a resuult Ezpo remembers her promise to Abuelita that she wuold take care of Mama I know this becuase on page 52 Abuelita says, "you promise to take care of Mama for me." She has done this by taking care of her while she is sick.

A problem surrounding this title plums is esperanza made another mistake she fed the babys PLUMS. and guess what babys stomachts can't digest raw plums. She lucky she remembered that rice cures an upset stomacht. Some thing that caught my attention about the dust storm is that the trucks didn't pick up the workers during the storm. Since the trucks didn't come she caught Valley Fever i no she caught valley because on page 155 it says, ""she has Valley Fever"" as a result esperanza is worried moma might die because these words stuck in her mind "If she survives." The surrounding the title is that babies can't eat raw plums. Esperanza did not know this and fed Lupe and Pepe raw plums. What caught my attention about the dust storm is that it came quickly and unexpectedly and know one knew could have predicted that it would hit right then. Mama's problem in this chapter is that she has Valley Fever. What cause this problem was the dust storm. Dust got caught in Mama'ws lungs and she can't fight it because she did not grow up at the camp so her body is not used to the air. As result Esperanza becomes worried and sad. I know this because on page 157 ti says " She wnated tot ellt he doctor that that she could not lose Mama, too. That she had already lost Papa and Aubuelita was too far away." Thsi proves it because ti shows how worried Esperanza is.

The problem surrounding the title is that Esperanza feeds Pepe and Lupe plums and thats a problem because little babies can't be fed raw plums. It was a real smart thing to think about if any body did anything to her to cure sickness and she thought rice water! And in no time the babies were better. What really caught my eye was that Isabel barged through the door during the sand storm and was worried about her cat more than anybody else! She could of asked if everyone is alright. the problem with mama is that she caught the Valley Fever flu and for it to go away it takes 6 months. Mama got the flu when the dust stowm hit the camp and any body who are not used to dust storms can simply catch it. As a result esperanza gets worried that she will lose mama just like she lost papa my proof is on page 157 " She wanted to tell the docter she could not lose mama too. That she had already lost papa and abuelita is to far away "

The problem surrounding the title is that Pepe and Lupe are babies and they can't eat raw plumbs. When Esperanza notices they aren't feeling too well, she gives them rice water. She does this because when she was sick, Abuelita gave her rice water to make her feel better. What caught my attention about the dust storm was that there were people in the dust storm that could have gotten dust in their eyes, which would sting their eyes. Lots of people, especially field workers could have gotten sick from the dust storm. Also, if a window is open, it could easily get indoors and be blinding to everyone indoors. Mama's problem in this chapter was she got sick because of the dust storm while she waited in the shed where she packed crops in. I know Mama got sick because on page 155 the text says,
"She has Valley Fever. What does that mean? asked Esperanza. It's a disease of the lungs that is caused by dust spores." As a result, Esperanza gets worried because on page 157 it says, She wanted to tell the doctor that she could not loose Mama too. That she had already lost Papa and that Abuelita was too far away. #B15

The problem surrounding the title of this chapter is that Esperanza feed the babies raw plum and plum goes fight through you and the babies didn't take it very well. Esperanza remember that when Esperanza had plums once Hortensia gave her rice water so, Esperanza gave that to the babies.
One thing that caught my attention during the storm was that Esperanza was worry about other people and rising above her selfishness.
Mama's problem was that when your older and move there and are no use to the air you can get an infection. I know that because on 155 it says, “She has Valley Fever." "What does that mean?" asked Esperanza. "It's a disease of the lungs that is caused by dust spores. Sometimes when people move to this area and aren't used to the air here the dust spores get into their lungs and cause an infection." Since Mama was out in the storm breathing plenty of dusty air it caused an infection in her lungs.
Esperanza starts to worry that Mama will die. I know this because it says "She wanted to tell the doctor she could not lose Mama, too. That she had already lost Papa and Abuelita was too far away

The problem surronding this title is that Esperanza gave Pepe and Lupe ripe plums. When you give babies ripe plums they will have to go to the bathroom A LOT. You have to cook the plums before you give them to babies. "Everyone knows that plums most be cooked for babies!!!" According to Isabel on page 143. The thing that caught my attention during the dust storm is how calm Esperanza stayed. She was scared, but she still stayed calm. She acted like this wasn't the first time she had been in a dust storm. The problem with Mama in the chapter is that she got really sick. The dust storm caused her to get sick. She has Valley Fever. I got this on 155, 156, and 157 it says, "She has Valley fever. What does that mean? asked Esperanza. It's a disease of the lungs that is caused by dust sore.....How sick? asked Hortensia... She may have the fever on and off for weeks but you must try to keep it down. She will cough and have headaches and joint aches... All she could do is wisper the docters uncertain words, If she survives." This is a real bad problem. She does not want to lose her mother, she already has lost her father. A lot of things happen to Esperanza in this books. She lost her father. Next, Tio Luis owns the land and wants to marry Mama. They have to leave their old life. Then, they travel to a camp. Finally Mama might die. This is not a happy life, I hope it gets better.

This chapter is called plums, and there is a huge problem in the chapter caused by plums. Since Esperanza is inexperienced with taking care of babies, she didn't know that she shouldn't feed Lupe and Pepe plums. They are too hard for the babies to digest, so their stomachs ache. That makes Esperanza's first day without Isabel even worse. Esperanza is very embarrased about the whole thing as Isabel draws attention to it when she says, "Oh, Esperanza, they are too young for raw plums!" on page 143. The thing that caught my attention about the dust storm is how fast it comes in and how frightening it must be. On page 147 it says "A roil of brown loomed over the mountain." It was not there moments before, and how it suddenly appeared is remarkable. I know that I would be terrified, much like the workers were, if there was a huge dust storm that was threatening me and my family. The dust storm is amazing but terrible. Mama's problem in this chapter is that she has 'valley fever', which is a disease she got from inhaling dust. This is a major problem because while most people don't even feel sick when they have it, Mama is one of the rare few who have serious symptoms caused by it. She might not survive. It even says "...After the storm, she never stopped coughing." on page 153. This qoute refers to the sickness. This will have an impact on everyone, for there is one less paying job while Mama recovers, and a lot more work for Esperanza who will have to take care of her. This problem was caused by the dust storm. While she was in the shed working, the dust storm hit and Mama must have breathed in a large quantity of dust. As a result, Esperanza is extremely worried. On page 157 the doctor says "...if she survives, it might take six months for her to get her full strength back." This means that Esperanza might loose her mother and be left an orphan. Not only that, but she would be even poorer than before, since there would be no income from her mother's job. Financially and emotionally, if Mama dies or doesn't get better soon Esperanza's life will be even harder than it already is.

1)The problem surronding the title is that the babies can't eat raw plums. Then Esperanza realizes what happened. Then she remembered that Hortensia gave her rice water when she was sick.
2)One thing that my attention was that Isabel cared about her cat more than the people. This caught my attention because, she didn't ask,"is everyone okay" or,"did anyone get hurt." Instead she went straight to her cat.
3)Mama's problem is that she's getting sick from the dust storm. This is a problem because they didn't have such good medicine back then unlike today. The dust storn caused this because mama was not use to the dust spores. Esperanza immedietly felt horrible and worried. This is true because on page 157 Esperanza thinks,"She felt the blood drain from her face. She wnated to tell the doctor that she couldn't lose mama, too.......Her voice strangled with fear. All she could do was whisper the doctors uncertain words,"If she survives."

The problem surroning this tile is that Pepe and Lupe are babies and to young for raw pluns.I noticed that the dust srom was almost like a rain storm only the rain was replaced by dust, i also noticed when Isabel burst into the door and all she cared about was the cat what happened to everyone else? The problem with Mama was that she got sick with the valley fever. She got this because she was not used to the dust storms I know this because in the book it says "Sometimes when people move to this area and arent used to the air here the dust spores get into their lungs and cause an infection".Esperaza gets really worried because of this because she already lost her Papa and cant loose her Mama. I know because in the book it says" she wanted to tell the doctor she could not loose Mama too.She had already lost Papa and Abuelita was to far away. Her voice strangled with fear. All she could do was whisper the doctors uncertain words "If she survives."

The problem surrounding this title is that Lupe and Pepe are very young infants and their stomachs cannot handle raw plums and of course Esperanza did not know and fed them many, many raw plums for lunch. This resulted in the babies having very ill stomachs and having bathroom issues. Also, plums are natural laxatives and in addition to the whole thing with delicate stomachs, the babies had a laxative for lunch.Esperanza solution of rice water was, thankfully, the right one.The rice water fixed the babies problems and Isabel was very suprised that Esperanza knew what to do.The thing that caught my attention was how Mama got sick from first time exposer to dust storms, yet the people who lived there their whole life, were completely immune to it seeing as I thought that they would have it worse because they'd been exposed many times.Mama's problem was that she got Valley Fever which is a very hard disease to cure.On page 157 it says,"...If she survives, it might take six months for her to get her full strength back."This shows that even though she could take medicine, she is not likely to survive and if she does it takes a while to fully recover. The cause of this awful illness is the dust from the dust storm getting into the pores of her lungs and infecting them badly. It is the very worst on adults who have never experienced a dust storm. As a result Esperanza is so distressed that she cannot even speak.I know his becaus eon page 157 it says,"her voice was strangled with fear."Also, now with Mama sick, someone will have to take of her and they would also have to take care of the babies, this would be to much for Esperanza. This removes two workers from the sheds so maybe Esperanza will have to work to get the money they need to survive. Overall it is a very challenging experience, both financialy and emotionaly, but it is also one that Esperanza will carry throughout the rest of her life.

The problem is that Esperanza feeds the babies regular plums instead of cooked plums. This is a problem because when they eat them they have a little potty trouble. The thing that caught my attention about the dust storm is that Mama would not stop coughing after it. Mama's problem in this chapter was that she got a lung problem. The dust storm caused the problem because when you are not used to rough weather conditions such as dust storms you usually get effected the most. Esperanza gets sort of worried that her mom might die. I know this because on pg. 157 it says, "She wanted to tell him that she could not loose Mama, too."

The problem surrouding the title is that Lupe and Pepe (little babies) ate a lot of raw plums. Raw plums are'nt suppose to be fed to babies. Luckily esperanza fed the babies rice water. What caught my attention about the dust storm was that when isabel ran through the door she only cared about her cat!!! What she should have done was ask "is everyone ok" but no she asked about her cat. the problem with mama in the chapter is that she got the valley fever during the dust storm, this desease takes 6 months to recover from!!! the dust spores from the dust storm caused the problem. they went into mama's lungs and created the infection. as a result of her mom being extremly sick esperanza turns really worried. i know this becauses on page 157 it says "she wanted to tell the doctor she could not loose mama too. That she had already lost papa and abuelita was to far away.

1) the problem is that the babies wet their diper alot after eating the plums.
2) the sickness that mama got caught my atention because it said that everyone who worked there got it.
3) Mamas problem is that she gets a sickness.
4) The dust storm caused this problem.
5) as a result esperanza gets scared that she will lose mama and she wants to tell the docter that she can not lose mama because she has also lost papa.

The problem surrounding the title is that because Esperanza was unexperienced so she fed the babies raw plums. The babies therefore soiled their diapers. This was a problem because Esperanza had to wash the diapers and as a result she burnt the beans.
It was very surprising to me when Irene said that a dust storm could break the glass, sometimes. I think so because any wind that could break glass would be very strong.
Mama's problem in this chapter is that she has caught Valley Fever. This disease is very serious because there is no cure and people could die from it. I know this because the docter says on page 157," if she survives." This shows that there is a possibillity that Mama might not survive. As a result, Esperanza becomes very worried for Mama. I know this because on page 157 it says,"she felt the blood drain from her face. She wanted to tell the docter that she could not lose Mama too".

The problem surrounding the title is that the babies te raw plums and got sick. The bigger problem was that there was a huge dust storm.
The dust storm caught my attention when Esperanza learned that the windows can shatter into pieces because the wind is so strong.
Mamas problem in this chapter was that she inhaled some dust and got sick. This illness is called valley fever.
Esperanza thinks that is bad enough that papa died but now she can't lose Mama. I know this because on page 157 it says"She wanted to tell the docter that she could not loose mama, too. That she had already lost Papa and that Abulita was too far awap.

the problem surrounding the title is that the babie ate raw plums. When Esperanza noticed that the babies are not feeling so well she gave them rice and water. She knew this because when she was sick that is what Hortensia gave her whenever she was sick. What caught my attention was when Isebell ran out side because she was worried about her cat. Mamas problem in this chapter was she got a fever which was caused by dust pores. Most of the adults and kids who lived there for a long time do not get it. The event that caused this problem was that Esperanza does not want to lose mama. I know this because on page 157 it says "she wanted to tell the docter she could not lose mama to". that is why I think Esperanza does not want to lose mama since she already lost papa.

The problem surronding this title "Plums" is Pepe and Lupe get sick because Esperanza feeds them raw plums, and their stomachs are too weak so they become sick and they repeatedly soiled their diapers. What caught my attention about the dust storm was how powerful it was. This caught my attention because on page 149 it says"The wind stopped, but the dust still swirled as if propelled by its own power."That quote proves my answer because it shows how powerful the storm was.Mama's problem in this chapter is that she gets a lung disease that can lead to death. What caused Mama's problem is the dust spores from the dust storm when she was out in the fields working and had no cover against the dust.As a result Esperanza has to face that she might lose Mama too.Even if Mama doesn't die she wont't be well for 6 months. So Esperanza will have to work almost twice as hard.

The problem surronding the title is little kids like Lupe and Pepe should not eat plums. But Esperanza did the exact opposite and gave them raw plums. But when she noticed that babies had alot of accidents she thought of the warm rice Hortensia would give her when she was young and cooked the rice and fed it to the babies. What caught my attention was how much Isabel cares about her cat. Personaly I thought Isabel would care about the babies but she cared more about her cat! Mama's problem was after the dust storm she had a huge coughing fit which turned out to be a really bad cough. Which then turned into a infection in her lungs. Esperanza becomes worried about what will happen next first papa then the house and now maby Mama!

The problem that surrounds the chapter is that Esperanza gave the babies raw plums when she shouldn't have. Then the babies got upset stomachs. Esperanza remebered that whenever she got an upset stomach, Hortensia would give her rice water. So, Esperanza gave the babies rice water which made them feel better. What caught my attention about the Dust Storm was that the winds were so powerful and hot that it could knock a flour sack out of someones hands. I know this because on page 147 it says,"A sudden blast of hot wind took the flour sack from Irene's hand and carried it to the fields. Mama's problem in this chapter is that she got Valley
Fever which causes an infection in your throat. Esperanza gets scared and worried because she doesn't want Mama to leave her just like Papa did. I know this because on page 157 it says,"She wanted to tell the doctor that she could not lose Mama, too. That she had already lost Papa and that Abuelita was too far away."

The problem is that Esparanza feeds the babies raw plums. Although she was able to solve the problem it was still embarasing as it says on page 143 " 'Well I am not everyone!' yelled Esparanza. She droped er head and put her hands over her face" In the dust storm the great force of wind fascinated me. It was also amazing how the dust could still propel it self forward by the force of other dust. Mamas problem in this chapter is that she becomes very ill with a disease known as Valley Fever. This disease could be fatal or leave no mark at all. The cause of such a disease is that Mama breathed in dust spores which got blown at her in the storm. As a result Esparanza is panic struck and can not take losing her last imediate family member. I know this because on page 157 "She wanted to tell the doctor she could not lose mama too. She had already lost Papa and Abuelita is too far away."

she basically fed the babies with the raw plums and thats when they got sick. I agree with you she started to get some rice water and the babies got better
