Who was responsible for the burning house?

Why do you think so?

Why did everyone laugh when Esperanza said that she could work too?

Tio Luis and Tio Marco are responsible for burning Esperanza's house. I think this because, Tio Luis wants Mama to marry him but Mama won't accept. So, Tio Luis has been making her life miserable until she finally says yes. That is why I think Tio Luis and Tio Marco started the fire. Everyone laughed when Esperanza said that she could work too because she never worked in her life. She was rich and never did anything! Mama and Esperanza leave in the middle of the night to escape from Tio Luis and Tio Marco forever. I think this because on pg. 50 it says, "Yes, she thought. They could have a home in California. A beautiful home. Alfonso and Miguel could take care of them and they'd be rid of the uncles." This proves my answer because it tells you that they left in the middle of the night to go and have a better life and be rid of their super evil uncles!

Tio Luis and Tio Marco were responsible for burning the house. I think this because Mama refused to marry Tio Luis. (Personally, I would go along Mama's desicion. I mean, who would want to marry those brats!!!)Everybody laughed when Esperanza said I will work too because they know the work is going to be harsh, and she has never lifted a finger. Mama and esperanza left in the middle of the night because, if they left at noon Tio Luis would know all their secret plans. I know this because on page 49 it states,"No one can know about this Senora," said Alfonso. We all have to keep this a secret..." that shows me that they all have to keep it secret because it clearly states that they all have to keep it a secret.

This is like a MAJOR problem, most likely caused by Tio luis and Tio marco. This is because on page 44 it says "I have come to give you another chance, said Tio Luis. If you reconsider my proposal, I wil build a bigger, more beautiful house and I will replant everything." I mean the only person that would rseally do it would be Tio Luis because since the house is burnt to the earth they could either rebuild it (Mama wouldn't be able to do that alone, which is why Tio Luis burnt it down) or to move. I think everyone laughed because Esperanza would be soooooo tired to do anything and because she had never worked in her life. I think mama and Esperanza left in the middle of the night because it was the best time to make sure Tio Luis wuld not see them!! One word I would use is sneaky because they crept out in the middle of the night!

#20's answers:
Tio Luis and Tio Marco were entirely responsible for setting the house on fire. He obviously did this because his yearning for Mama's fortune isn't really affectin her at all so he decided to take action. He is SUCH a blackmailer!!!! Everyone laughed when Esperanza sais she could work to because this girl has most definitely NEVER lifted a finger in her entire life! That goes to show that people do not respect Esperanza because of her being so wealthy and spoiled. That also proves that being rich beyond belief can result in some people not thinking very highly of you. Esperanza and Mama left in the middle of the night to flee from the Tio's, leaving Aguascalientes behind them. I can simply prove my answer by using this quote from page 50: "Yes, she thought. They could have a home in California. A beutiful home. Alfonso and Miguel could take care of them and they'd be rid of the uncles." How selfish! WHO CARES IF THEY HAVE A "BEAUTIFUL HOME"? She should be grateful to be out of her uncles clutches!!!!! NOT worrying about whether or not her home will be nice! What a brat! Thanks #23 for the quote on page 50. (Still fuming with anger from Esperanza...)

Tio Luis and Tio Marco are responsible for burning Esperanza's house. I think this because Tio Luis wants Mama to marry him but since she said no, Tio Luis will do anything to make her life miserable. Even if it means destroying Esperanza's house. Everyone laughed when Esperanza said she could work too because she has never lifted a finger in her whole life. Why would she be able to work like the servants all of a sudden? Esperanza doesn't have any idea what it is like to actually work. Mama and Esperanza left in the middle of the night so they could escape their uncles and have a home and a new life. I know this because on page 50 it says "Yes, she thought. They could have a home in California. A beautiful home. Alfonso and Hortensia and Miguel could take care of them and they'd be rid of the uncles."This prooves my answer because it tells you that they would be rid of the uncles and that they'd have a new home in California.

i think that tio luis and tio marco are responsable for the burning of esperanzas house and family vinard.i agree with #23 i think that they did this to make mama and esperanzas life misrable so they would say yes, and live as one big MISARABLE family.everyone laughed when esperanza said that she would "work to"...page 50...because she had never worked a day in her life.Esperanza and mama left in the middle of the night because if the sick ,greedy ,kaniving uncles saw them they would be put on lock down forever and would never see day light again.

Tio Marco and Tio Luis. They are seriously evil uncles. If they were related to me I would feel ashamed. So I think they burned the house. I think this because on pg 46 Alfonso says, "If you don't intend to marry him, Senora, you cannot stay here. He would burn down the servants' quarters next." This proves that they (being Esperanzas family) think Tio Marco and Tio Luis set the fier to the Ortega's household, and fields. Everyone laughed when ESperanza said she could work too because she has never worked a day in her life. They also might think this because she is a spoiled rotten brat who just has to give the say so and one of her servants does what ever she wants for them. Mama and Esperanza left in the middle of the night so to avoid the scum called Tio Marco and Tio Luis.

Tio Luis and Tio Marco are responsible for burning the house. I know this because on page 43 it states, "They all knew that the uncles had arranged the fire." Everyone laughed when Esperanza said that she could work too because she had never lifted a finger in her life. She always had servants to do whatever she wanted. Mama and Esperanza leave in the middle of the night to head to California. They also left in the night because no one could see them at that time. I know this because on page 55 it states, "She and Mama and Hortensia were wrapped in dark shawls to blend in with the night." This helps me understand that they needed to blend in without being noticed by anyone.

The person that was responsible for burning the house down was Tio Luis. I think this because Tio Luis is mean and greety and want's mama to marry him. They all laughed when Esperanza said she could work too because Esperanza never needed to work in her whole life. Also, because she had servants to do the work for her. mama left in the middle of the night because Tio Luis could find them leaving in the day and they can all get hurt or get in big trouble. I know this because on page 50 it says," Yes she thougt. they can have a home in Californa and live with Alsondro and Miugel can take care of them and they can get rid of the uncles". Words that can prove my answer is that Tio Luis is the banker and his brother is the Mayor and they can go to jail or get hurt. I know this because on 49 it says," we have to keep a secret nobody can know." that proves that they can get hurt or go to jail.

I think Tio Luis and Tio Marco were responsible for burning the house because they are such EVIL people! I just knew from the minute Mama woke Esparanza up and said the house was on fire that it was part of the uncle's mean scheme. (Page 40). I still am angry with them for the governor plan and really think they are going WAY too far! Everyone laughed when Esparanza said that she could work too because everyone knows she COULDN'T work a DAY in her life and they laughed for her even saying the idea! Mama and Esparanza left in the middle of the night because they had to run away after Mama lied and accepted Tio Luis's proposal so that they could go as far as they could on their journey to America. The words I could use to prove this is on page 45 when Mama says "forgive me" because she is absolutely unhappy with her decision and later on, she escapes.

I think Tio Luis and Tio Marco started the fire because Tio Luis said that Mama will regret her decision and I think that those greedy little goats that somehow gained control of Aguascalientes, Mexico, define regreting as commiting arson and other felonies. Everybody laughed when Esperanza said that she could work too because she is spoiled and she barely helps on the ranch, let alone in a camp for Mexican farm workers. Mama and Esperanza left in the middle of the night to escape Tio Luis because on P. 50, it says, "They could have a home in California. A beautiful home. Alfonso and Mguel could take care of them and they'd be rid of the uncles." and the family might be leaving their once luxurious lives to find a new life somewhere away from those devils who seem like their hearts were replaced with bank accounts and senate seats who for some reason, they are called Tio Marco and Tio Luis. Thanks #23 for the quote.

I think that Tio Luis and Tio Marco were responsible for burning the house. I think this because Tio Luis asked Mama to marry him and Mama refused. So Tio Luis has been making her life miserable. Everyone laughed at Esperanza because she never does anything she has everyone else do it for her. Mama and Esperanza flee to California because they want to escape from the uncles. Pg.50 "They could have a home in California. A beautiful home. Alfonso and Hortenesia and Miguel could take care of them and they'd be rid of the uncles. This proves the answer because if they stayed they'd still have to deal with the uncles. If they go everything will be fine and everyone's life will be easier.

Tio Luis and Tio Marco were responsible for the burning house. I think this because Tio Luis wanted the ranch and he said Romona(Mama) would regret her decision of not marrying him. Everyone laughed when Esperanza said she would work too because everyone thought she would never work and be waited on. Mama and Esperanza left because they didn't want Tio Luis to know that their leaving to California. Two words that would prove my answer is desperate and defiant. I know this because on page 49 it says, "This will be a great insult to Luis. If he finds out, he will prevent you from leaving this territory."
A tiny smile appeared on Mama's tired face "Yes it would be a great insult to him, wouldn't it?"

I belive that Tio Luis and Tio Marco are responsible for burning Esperanza's house.I know this because Tio Luis is very mad that Mama wont marry him and wants to prove a point.Everyone laughed when Esperanza said that she could work too because she is a rich brat who has never worked in her life. She was just sitting on a chair eating figs and that's about it!Mama and Esperanza ran away in the night because they needed to escape from their greedy, evil so on uncles.I know this because all is good with most everyone except the uncles.I know they are leaving because on page 50 it says "Yes, she thought. They could have a home in California."Not Mexico.

I think Tio Luis and Tio Marco are responsible for burning Esperanza's house because Tio Luis wanted to marry mama and mama said no.Then Luis told mama if she didn't change her mind he would do bad things to her and I think this is one of them.I think everyone laughed at Esperanza when she said she cold work too because she is rich and always has slaves do work for her.Esperanza and mama decided to leave so they could get away from the uncles that were probably planning another bad thing to do to Esperanza's family.I know this because on page 50 it said "Yes she thought. They could have a home in California.A beautiful home.Alfonso, Hortensia and Miguel could take care of them and they'd be rid of the (evil) uncles."

Papa's step brothers, Tio Luis and Tio Marco were responsible for burning El Rancho da las Rosas. I think they did it so Mama would get scared and convinced to marry Luis. Everyone started to laugh when Esperanza said she could work too because she had never lifted a finger in her life. Mama and Esperanza snuck away in the middle of the night because they wanted to get away from Luis for good without him knowing. A word that could describe the characters during the chapter is sneaky because they got away without Luis knowing. I know this because on page 55 it says, "The night before the dressmaker was scheduled to come, Mama woke Esperanza in the middle of the night, and they left with only what they could carry."

Tio Luis and Tio Marco were totally responsible for Esperanza's house burning down. I know this because Tio Luis wants Mama to marry him. So, he made her life more miserable (burning the house down) until Mama finally accepted Tio Luis's proposal. Everyone laughs when Esperanza says, "that she can work too" because she has never worked in her life. She was always a perfect/wealthy little girl her whole life until this accident, when all she can do is work. Esperanza and her family leave in the middle of the night because the shadows over the fields would set a vast darkness over them so they wouldn't be seen by anybody like Tio Luis or Tio Marco. I know this because on page 50 it says, " Yes, she thought. They could have a home in California. A beautiful home. Alfonso and Miquel could take care of them and they'd be rid of uncles." This proves my answer because it shows you they are leaving in the middle of the night and move to California to live a new life!! (WITHOUT UNCLES!!)

Mama and Esperanza leave in the middle of the night because they don't want to be seen. A few words that prove my answer are blend in with the night. Tio Luis and Tio Marco are responsible for burning the house. I think this because Tio Luis and Tio Marco wanted the house. But because mama said no to Tio Luises offer he would make life harder for herso he burned their house. They laughed because Esperanza is so used to everyone doing work for her and she not lifting a finger. Mama and Esperanza left in the middle of night to escape from the uncles. I think this because on page 50 Esperanza says,"They could have a in California. A beautiful Alfonso, Hortensia, and Miguel could take care of them and they'd be rid of their uncles."

I think Tio Luis and Tio Marco are the ones that burned the house because Tio wants mama to marry him so he can be elected governor, but mama does not want to marry him. So,he burns their house and she eventually accepts the proposal to keep her family and friends out of danger.I think everyone laghed when she said that because they all knew she could not survive a day working. She was rich and never had to work a day in her life. They left in the middle of the night because they had to escape from Tio and neeeded the cover of darkness.i think this because on page 50 it says "yes she thought.they could they could have a home in california,a beatiful home.alfonso and miguel could take care of them and be rid of "this proves my point because it shows they leave during the night to be rid of the terrible uncles!:0:):(:):(:0 #17

Tio Luis is oveously the one who started the fire. He said he would get his revenge also on page 44 it says" Of course if you prefer, you can live here with the servents, as long as another tragedy does not happen to their homes as well." It sounds like he was going to burn the servents home down too, if she didn't marry him.

Everyone laughed when Esperanza said she would work because they knew she wasn't. Once she sees the hard working conditions she will not work. She thinks it will be something easy, which it won't be. It is also funny to see Esperanza say she is going to work, since she hasn't lifted a finger in her whole life.

Esperanza and Mama have to leave in the dark so they won't get seen. It makes it easier for people to see you in the light. Also in the night people think you are a sleep. Overall the dark gives you protection. I got this on page 58 and it says," Now we must hurry. You need the protection of darkness."

Tio luis and Tio Marco are responsible for burning down Esperansa's house. I say that because Tio Luis probably knows mama will not marry him so he burns down the house so they have no land or house to own and mama will have no choice but to marry him. That is why I think Tio luis started the fire. Everyone laughed at Esperanza because she has never worked in her life and not one person thought she could work. Mama and Esperanza left at the middle of the night to escape because the uncles were still asleep and if they got out quietly she could escape with out them knowing. I think this because on pg. 50 it said" Yes she thought, they could have a home in calafornia. A beautiful home. Alfonso and Miguel could take care of them and they would be rid of the uncles" This proves my answer because it says they left to have a nice home and be rid of the bad uncle!

3)Everyone laughed when Esperanza said she would work too because it's funny that now she realizes that she has to work and also she has never lifted a finger because she has servants do whatever she wants.
4) Mama and Esperanza had to leave in the middle of the night because they needed the night to hide them. I know that because on page page 55 it says, “She and Mama and Hortensia were wrapped in dark shawls to blend in with the night."Also on page page 58 Senor Rodriguez says "Now we must hurry. You need the protection of the darkness." One word to prove my answer is smart because they made the women wear black shawls to blend in with the night.

I think the Uncles burned the house down because they said that they would make there lives VERY difficult for them. Everyone laughed when Esperanza said that she could work too because she had never worked a day in her life. Esperanza and Mama left in the middle of the night because it was to risky to leave in the daytime because the Uncles had so many spies and bandits out. Tio Luis and Tio Marco are responsible for burning the house. I thinnk so because they probably thought that if they burned it they would leave no other choice but for Mama to marry Tio Luis. Also it would leave Mama with nothing because in the will all that was left to her was the house and what was inside of it. Everyone laughed because Esperanza is a twelve year old girl who has never worked in her life. So it is funny to say that she will work without even knowing what to do. Mama and Esperanza had to leave in the middle of the night so that no on would see them. If Tio Luis saw them leaving they would get into big trouble and wouldn't be able to leave Mexico. Words that prove my answer are "blend in with the night " becuse that is what Mama and Esperanza have to do to stay safe. "Esperanza was quiet and stared at the dirt, hiding the smirk on her face." This proves my answer becuse it shows that Mama planned to leave in the middle of the night and not actually marry Tio Luis.

I believe that Tio Luis and Tio Marco were responsible for the burning house. I believe this because on page 32, Tio Luis said "I can make life difficult for. Very difficult." This leads me to think that this is Tio Luis's revenge on Mama because of her refusal to marry him. He also wanted all of the land for himself, so by burning the house he recieves the land the house once covered as well as the authority to make Mama and Esperanza leave. There are just too many benefits for him not to have been involved. When they must leave Mexico to become migrant workers, Esperanza suggests that she can work too. Everybody laughs because they all know that Esperanza has never worked a day in her life, and that she is not strong enough to face the hard conditions of working in that job. Esperanza doesn't understand that migrant workers have to slave away in farms all day without breaks or much pay. I doubt that Esperanza will still want to work when she sees what it's really like. That, in my opinion, is why everyone laughed when Espereanza suggested that she could work. Mama and Esperanza had to leave in the middle of the night for protection. If it were the middle of the day the cart that they were hiding in would be likely to be checked, thus endangering their concealment. There is also a greater chance that they would be seen by one of Tio Luis and Tio Marco's spies, since most people are at home in the middle of the night but out during the day. Words that would prove my answer are protection, darkness, and roads at night. They are all quoted from the book and all have to do with Mama and Esperanza leaving Aguascalientes at night. A quote that could prove my answer is "You need the protection of darkness." which was said by Mr. Rodriguez on page 58. I think that, that statement proves my answer of why they need to leave in the middle of the night.

Tio Luis and Tio Marco are responsible for burning Esperanza's house.I think this because Mama didn't accept Tio Luis' marrige proposal ,which made him angry.By burning down Mama's house it made Tio Luis' proposal more valubale to Mama because he promised to build her a new larger house if she married him him.Everyone laughed when Esperanza said"And...and I could work, too."because Esperanza has never worked a day in her life.Esperanza also is unexposed to what the work that she'll have to do in California is.The closest thing she has done to work is cut the first grape cluster,of the grape harvest, but the work in Californis will be harder and not an honor ,like cutting the first grape cluster.Mama and Esperanza left in the middle of the night because dark would be a cover for them.I know this because on page 55it says"She, Mama and Hortensia were wrapped in dark shawls to blend in with the night."If one of Tio Luis' spys saw Esperanza and Mama leaving in a wagon they would alert Tio Luis and the uncles would get revenge on the family if he caugt them trying to escape.

Before I start,who is itunes52?

I think that Tio Luis and Tio Marco burned the house because Tio Luis wants Mama to marry him but Mama won't accept his proposal. This Makes Tio Luis very angry and her makes life as hard as he possibly can for Mama and her family.Everyone laughed at Esperanza vow to work because she was born and raised as rich girl with many servants and many, many priviliges. This also struck everyone as funny because she said it very defiantly, but she really had no idea what kind of horrible labor she was going to have to go through if she wanted to work.Esperanza and Mama left in the middle of the night because they needed the cover of darkness(to run away from Tio Luis). Also,if they had waited another day, Tio Luis might have asked to come with them to see Abuelita. This would have complicated a lot of things.Words that might prove my answer would be,"blend in with the night"(were we supposed to use a qoute or not?). I chose these because, like I said, they needed to cover themselves and blend in. Also, they couldn't be seen so they coudn't go on the main roads.Another qoute that proves my answer is,"they could not take the chance of walking on the roads...". This also shows that they must stay undercover because the uncles have many spies.

I think that Tio Luis started the fire. I think so because the only thing that Esperanza and her family live in is the house; without it, they would be homeless. Also, on page 32 it says,"You will regret your decision Ramona. you must keep in mind that this house and those grapes are on my property. I can make things difficult for you." burning down their house would make it "very difficult" for the family.
I think everyone laughed at Esperanza because she did not know how to work, nor did she know how hard it would be. I know this because on page 52 to 53 it says,"..Mama, at a time like this mustwe worry about some poor family who needs clothes? Esperanza, said Mama,.....that trunk of clothes for the poor? Esperanza, it is for us." This shows that she did not realized that she was now "poor".
Mama and Esperanza leave in the middle of the night because that time is when it is most likely no one will see them. They don't want anyone to see them because if that person is Tio Luis, then he clearly would stop them. I know this because on page 59 it says,"..Think how angry he will be when he discover you have gone. We cannot take the chance of you being seen." this shows that they must be careful.

I think that Tio Luis is the one who is responsible for the burning house because he was trying to make Mama's life miserable so she would marry him. I know this because on page 44 it says,"Of course, if you prefer, you can live here with the servants, as long as another tragedy does not happen to their homes as well." That shows that Tio Luis will also burn the servants homes down if Mama doesn't marry him. So that proves that he did it. Everyone laughed when Esperanza said she could work too because she was a wealthy girl and always had the work done for her. Esperanza and Mama left in the middle of the night because if they left during the day, Tio Luis would know all of their secret plans. He would be all over them, but if they left at night, it would be dark so they could sneak away under the night sky, and everyone would be asleep. I know this because on page 49 it says,"No one could know about this, Senora." This proves my answer because no one can see them leave or hear about their plan or they're done for.

I think Tio Lius and tio Marco are reasponsible for burning Esperanza's house because on page 32 it said "if you do not marry me your life is going to be miserable. That is why I think Tio Luis and Tio Marco burned the house down. Everyone laughed when Esperanza said I am going to help work because she never really worked in her life because her workers did whatever she wanted. Now she started to realize that now she has to help work. Mama and Esperanza needed to leave in the middle of the night because they need to hide them selves from Tio Lius and Tio Marco because she did not want marry him. I think money is a word that they need because they need to get a job To support them selves

I think Tio Luis was responsible for what happend to Esperanza's house. I think this because Tio Luis said on page 25" I hope that no more unfortunate events happen."(Sorry I don't have the bok wit me). The loving Mom and Esperanza left in the night because they new that Tio Luis would have spys so they could not show there faces in day otherwise they would be caught. Some describing scenes and words are when Momma and Esperanza were over by the servant house Tio Luis came over to them with a real attitude. Now no one would do that after someone lost all they had except for Tio Luis.

I think Tio Luis is responsible for burning the house because Tio Luis wanted to get his revenge on Mama. Also, while the house was burning, he approached them and said that he could change the lives of them, and everybody else who live on his land. Everybody laughed at Esperanza when she said that she could work too because it wasn't common for a 12 year old girl to work on a farm. Mama and Esperanza left in the middle of the night because they did not want to live on the land of Tio Luis. Another reason they left at night was because they needed to stay hidden from Tio Luis and his spies. In the book it says that Mama, Hortensia, And Esperanza, were covered in fruit in a wagon while Miguel and Senor Rodgereiguez sat up front so it would look like they were just delivering fruit.

Sorry I didn't put a quote, I left my book at school by accident.

1) Tio Luis and Tio Marco are definitely behind the house burning.

2) I think so because it even states on page 43 it says "And there was no point in talking about how it happened. They all knew the uncles had arranged the fire."

3) They all laughed because Esparanza is weak and can not stand filth. Also because if she wanted to work she wouldn't know what to do or how to do it.

4) They left in the middle of the night because the could wear dark shawls to make them hide easier. I know they need the night as cover because it says on page 58 "You need the protection of darkness." and on page 55 it says "She and Mama and Hortensia were wrapped in dark shawls to blend with the night."
