Assignment #2:
Two words to describe Esperanza so far in the novel are supersticious and greedy (my apologies for using 2 words). I chose these 2 words because when Esperanza pricked her finger, she immediately felt as if "bad luck" was heading in her direction. Now, not only does that prove her supersticious, but also greedy. This is because Esperanza automatically thought that the thorny rose had intentionally hurt her by leaving a fairly bad cut in her palm. That just goes to show that Esperanza feels as if she should never be hurt because she is lucky to be granted with an incredible fortune. She is blessed to also have a loving Mama, Papa, Abuelita and plenty of servants to do what ever she asked.
In the 1st chapter of Esperanza Rising, Papa and Esperanza show affection for eachother. Papa wanted Esperanza to have the best possible life. He showed her wealth and compassion. Even when Esperanza stole his beef jerky, Papa still didn't seem to ming. Well, that's okay...until shes 16 and steals a car, of course!!!

One character trait that describes Esperanza is, stuck up. I think this because on page 7 it says, "the beautiful white gowns they would wear, the big celebrations where they would be presented, and the sons of the richest families who would dance with them." I thought this made her really stuck up because someone shouldn't judge people by how rich they are. Only dancing with the people who come from the richest families to me is really snobby. When Esperanza is six years old in the story, her dad was trying to teach her something and he acted so nice when he got her to think the land was alive.

I would have to say that one word that would describe Esperanza would be negative. I didn't take this word from class, it just explains why she suddenly thought that the thorn prick was bad luck. If I were her I would just walk inside, wash it and then come back out to finish working. Page 8 "She bent over to pick a red bloom, fully opened, and pricked her finger on a vicious thorn. Big pearls of blood pulsed from the tip of her thumb and she automatically thought, "bad luck."
In the last two chapters of the book I realized that when Esperanza was young, she admired Miguel. I found this on page 17
"Several years ago, when Esperanza was still a young girl, mama and papa had been discussing boys from "good families" whom Esperanza should meet someday. She couldn't imagine being matched with someone she had never met. So she announced, "I am going to marry Miguel!"

One word that describes Esperanza is helpful. Esperanza is helpful because on page 4, "Papa handed Esperanza the knife." so she could help gather grapes and roses. While she was waiting for Papa to return, Abuelita taught Esperanza how to crotchet which shows that they are close even in a time of worry

One word that descibes Ezperanza is spoiled. She is spoiled because she has all that she wants, servants, a whole ranch, and is probably as rich as she could get. She is also spoiled because her papa lets her steel her beef jerky, thats okay until she gets put in the slammer for stealing when she is 18!!! I know this because in the text it states, "Sometimes he even brought beef jerky that the cattlemen had made, but Ezperanza always had to find it first, searching in his shirt pockets while he hugged her." Page 9. In the first and second chapter, Ezperanza and her papa act nicely to each other. Making promises, talking walks in their huge grape vineyard. Holding big fiestas. Then Ezperanza gets hit by the fact that her papa is dead.

Anonymous said...

the one before was #11, sorry!!

a. Ezperanza is a pretty young girl with midnight black hair and is always whereing a pretty dress from her parents. I know th at Esperanza is always whereing a pretty dress because on the back of the book it says;" she would always have fancy dresses and a beautiful home filled with servants.

b. One charecter trait that could be used to discribe her is spoiled. I think she is spoiled because she has many "house servants"...page 4...and gets "a porclen doll from papa."...page 9-10...

c. I chose this word because she has gets and expects so much from her family and servants.( the proof is in the second paragraph )

d. in the first chapter papa and Esperanza show there love for each other. They do this by bonding and showing each other there secrets. The secret papa showed Esperanza how he could hear the earths heart beat if you listen closly.

Esperanza is spoiled. I think this because Esperanza pricked her finger on a rose amd thought she had "bad luck". That prooves that she is spoiled because she doesn't think that anything bad should happen to her. Papa is encouraging to Esperanza because he lets her steal his beef jerky. As a result, Esperanza is encouraged by Papi to steal things because he let's her take them.

One good character trait that fits the backround of Esperanza is that she is spoiled. She is spoiled because she gets whatever she wants like servents, fields of crops and riches. Another example of when Esperanza is spoiled is when Papa allows her to steal his beef jerky when he comes home from work. The proof of this statement is that on page 9 it says, "Sometimes he even brought beef jerky that the cattelman had made, but Esperanza always had to find it first, searching his shirt pockets while he hugged her. Esperanza and Papa are always very happy and peaceful on their farm always having fun and throwing partys/fiestas. Then fear strikes when Papa dies at the end of chapter 2 and Esperanza and Mama don't know what to do. I'd like to thank #11 for giving that excellent quote about the beef jerky.:)

Before I get started with the assignment I just want to say reading all the things other people wrote has really helped me. So I give credit to anyone that I borrowed an idea or am going to borrow an idea, thanks!

Now for the assignment:
I think that Esperanza is very spoiled. I think this because on the back cover it says,"Esperanza believed her life would be wonderful forever. She would always live on her family's ranch in Mexico. She would always have fancy dresses and a beautiful home filled with servants. Papa and Abuelita would always be with her."
I think the author should have included Mama there to. I chose this word because she has servants. When someone has servants it usually means they are richer than you can imagine. Usually. Also she never has to work to get anything she just askes for it and someone immediatly buys it for them. Esperanza and Papi act loving toward each other by taking walks in the grape field. Thanks to whomever said that.

One word that describes Esperanza is spoiled. She thought that she would always live with her Mama and Papa with fancy dresses, servants and whatever she liked. I know this because on the back of the book it says, "She would always have fancy dresses and a beautiful home filled with servants." In the first 2 chapters Esperanza and Papa were always enjoying themselves with each other. Papa was setting some bad examples though. He left beef jerky in is pocket for Esperanza to steal from him when they hugged. Stealing is a bad action and Papa doesn't care if she steals from his pocket.

One character trait-(although there are quite a few I could select from)-that I would use to best describe the main character of this novel (Esparanza) would be the word spoiled. I think she is spoiled because she is always getting sympathy, love, food, care, and plenty of other nice things! Even her father lets her steal his beef jerky- shge doesn't even THANK him for it! Therefore, I think it shows that she may not be well experienced for when she is grown because of her spoiled attitude. I know this because on pg.9 it says,"Sometimes he even brought beef jerky that the cattlemen had made, but Esparanza always had to find it first, searching his shirt pockets while he hugged her."

I think that Esperanza is spoiled. I picked this word because she always thought her life was perfict. I know this because on the back cover it says,"Esperanza belived her life would be wonderful forever. Esperonza and papa behave towards each other because they both are wealthy and they both get everything they want. I know this because when ever Esperanza takes something papa does not mind because he can get more.

One word that would describe Esperanza is spoiled. I think this because on the back cover it states, "She would always have fancy dresses and a beautiful home filled with servants." This meant to me that Esperanza was very spoiled to have all of these things. (No matter what.) Also I know this because her father would let Esperanza STEEL beef jerky out of his jacket. When Esperanza gets older she could still be doing this but to people that she does not know. Her father spoiles her by doing this.

One word that describes Esperanza is spoiled. This describes her because she is rich and has probobly never lifted a twig by herself. And goes from a rich care free brat "She would always have fancy dresses and a beautiful home filled with servents"To an orphan who will actualy have to work and do something other than sit on her butt and watch her servents work.Papa shows not to care much about Esperanza.I see this because he lets her get away with stealing things and not minding if she pick pockets him.you would think he is a great dad until you end up in jail with murderers and fellow pick pockets because of him not caring.

Esperanza is a wealthy girl and having a great life until Papa dies. Papa's death will always affect her happiness. One word that describes Esperanza is spoiled because she is rich and has many things. For example, Esperanza has many dresses and servants. I know this because on the back of the book says,"She would always have fancy dresses and a beautiful home filled with servants." Papa and Esperanza were very close and love each other. Thank you almost everyone for the trait of spoiled.

One word that describes Esperanza is supersticious. I chose the word superstitious because on page 8 when it says
"She bent over to pick a red bloom, fully opened, and pricked her finger on a vicious thorn. Big pearls on blood pulsed from the tip of the thumb and she automatically thought bad luck." I knew that she was superstitious because pricking your finger and having bad luck is only a saying. Esperanza is also spoiled because she steals her papa's beef jerkey and her papa doesn't even care.

"There was the same black hair, wavy and thick. Same dark lashes and fair, creamy skin." One personality trait is that she's disonhest because she steals beef jurky from her papi. I chose this trait becausei was surprised she stole his beff jurky. One realsonship between Espranza and her uncles is that her uncles don't pay attention to her.

one character trait is spoild. I say this because her papa plays a little game with her when she steals beef jurky from his pockets with him knowing. The reason I chose this example because it shows she is so spoild to the point where her father lets her steal from him. Papa and Esperanza are very friendly towords each other. I mean he lets her steal from him every day. I mean it's ok untill she becomes a common thief.

A word I would use to desribe Esperanza is spoiled. I think spoiled is a good word because Esperanza stole the beef jerky out of papa's pocket. When she's older and takes it out of someone's hand she's going to be in trouble.Pg.8 "She couldn't imagine living anywhere other El Rancho de las Rosas. Or with any other fewer servants. Esperanza and Papa have a good relationship because when he died Esperanza was probally the saddest in her family out of everyone.

Esperanza is a 12 year old girl with long black hair. She is a girl that comes from a very wealthy family. One word that describes Esperanza is superstitous. I think this because when she got pricked by the rose thorn she automatically said to herself "bad luck". Some people think as superstition as a joke but to Esperanza it was not.
I think papa and Esperanza treat each other very good. They show love for each other and tell each other secrets.

One word to describe Esperanza is stuck up.I FEEL THIS WAY BECAUSE ON PAGE 7 IT SAYS"THE BEAUTIFUL WHITE GOWNS THEY WOULD WEAR,THE GREAT CELEBRATIONS,AND THE BOYS FROM ONLY THE RICHEST BOYS IN THE RICHEST FAMILIES.SHE SAYS "IM GOING TO MARRY MIGUEL".SHE IS REALLY SNOBBY TO PICK SOMEONE AT 6.SHE PROBABLY GET HER WAY SINCE SHE IS RICH AND STEALS THE BEEF JERKY OUT OF HER DADS POCKET!!!

One character trait that describes Esperanza in this novel so far is spoiled. I choose spoiled because on page 9 it said "Sometimes papa even brought beef jerky that the cattlemen had made, but Esperanza always had to find it first, searching his shirt pockets while he hugged her" and that was spoiled because papa let her search his pockets. Also she is spoiled for all the nice things she has in that time of 1930, she had shelter, food and clothes. She also again gets a fiesta and nice white dresses that is a little spoiled because most family's were not that rich and couldn't pay for a birthday party's, and that really told me she was spoiled.

Esperanza is a greedy and snobby person because she always is talking about herself and what she always gets and what she wants. To me this describes Ezperanza because she is always worried about herself because in the book it says her and her friends always talk about what they want to do at there big party for there 15th birthday. I think this because on page 7 is says, " The beautiful white gowns they would where, the big celebrations they would be presented, and the sons on the richest families they would dance with." This is proof because she sounds all snobby and greedy because so acts like she only cares about. In the first 2 chapters Papa and Esperanza acted like they were very close because when Papa came home with beef jerky from the servants who work the cattle, Esperanza would always have to sniff it out when they would hug in order to have it. This is one example because Papa knew that this would be fun for Esperanza and it was like a game to her in a way. Another example is when Papa comes home and is covered in blankets in the book it say, "Esperanza felt her heart drop. A noise came from her mouth and slowly, her first breath of grief grew into a tormented cry. She fell to her knees and sank into a dark hole of despair and disbelief." This is a example of when they were very close because it must of hurt her a lot when she realized her Papa had died to sink down into a dark hole of despair and disbelief.

One charcter trait that describes her is selfish. I say that because, on page 10 Esperanza say's to her mom,"Mama, my finger. An angry thorn stabbed me". So Esperanza says the thorn purposely pricks her and she blaims it on the thorn.
In the first two chapters Esperanza and her father have a big relationship, and trust between them. I think they have a trust because on page 4 it says,"This job was usually reserved for the eldest son of a wealthy rancher, but since Esperanza was an only child and papa's pride and glory she got the honor."

Assignment #2
A word the describes Esperanza is eager because she and he friends are eager to grow up. She wants to grow up because she can't wait to experience to moment of her Quinceanera. A Quinceanera is when a girl turns 15 she is allowed to marry and will become the head of their household. I know this because on page 7 it says"When they were all together they talked about one thing: their Quinceaneras, the celebration partys they would have when the turn 15" I think Esperanza's Quinceanera will be a very important part of her life. I also think Esperanza is loved alot because on page 4 it says"This job was usually reserved for the eldest son of a wealthy rancher , but since Esperanza was an only child and Papa's pride and glory, she was always given the honer." This is why I think Esperanza is loved.

One character trait to describe Esperanza is spoiled or greedy. I chose this describing word for many reasons, first on the back it says "Esperanza believed her life would be wonderful forever". Another clue to her being spoiled is on the back it says "she would always have fancy dresses and a beautiful home filled with servants". That is just one more reason why she is spoiled! Another reason to show that Esperanza is spoiled is that her dad always lets her steal beef jerky and Esperanza doesn't even say thank you. For example Pg.9 ... "Sometimes he even brought beef jerky that the cattle men had made, but Esperanza always had to find it first, searching while he hugged her. Papa wanted Esperanza to have the best life that she could. Papa gave her wealth and more... although Esperanza received the wealth and and love she only stole papa beef jerky, but papa didn't care. Thats how papa and Esperanza behave toward each other in the first two chapters.

One word that describes Esperanza is negative. For example, on page 8when she is pricked by the thorn she immediately says "bad luck". That shows me that she always expects the worst. If her mind immediately jumps to conclusions such as bad luck, or something else unfavorable than she must always see the worst in things, instead of the silver lining. I can only imagine how she will react to her father being hurt, and the many other harmful things that are sure to happen to her. She has had a very easy life so a small, insignifigant thing like being pricked by a thorn will seem to throw her life into chaos. I do sympathize, for if you had never had to face lifes true disappointments you would never really no what you should be unhappy and negative about. Esperanza is certainly a negative, spoiled person, but I hope that will change as the story unfolds.

B#7

One word to describe Esperanza is negative, this is because she just assumed she had bad luck. It could mean good luck, she doesn't know. She is just expecting the worst. When people expect the worst, they will probally get the worst. I got this from page 8 it says " She bent over to pick a red bloom, fully oppened, and pricked her finger on a vicious thorn. Bad luck she said." Papa and Esperanza are really close. Even though Espranza stole Papa's beef jerky. He really does not care. He might even think it is a tradition for them. They have such a good relationship. I wonder what will happen after the night her dad dies?

I think that Esperanza can be greedy. I think this because even though she knows that people are poorer than her she still is greedy.Like on page 8 it says "Becuse she couldn't think of living anywhere but El Rancho de las Rosas. Or with any fewer servants. Or without being surrounded by the people who adored her." I think that this shows that she is greedy since she wants a lot of servants to do things for her. I thnk that Esperanza and Papa have a close relationship. I think thsi because he lets her have big parties and lets her cut the first grape vine of the harvest.Papa considers Esperanza hispride and glory and she thinks that he is sweet, smart, and a wonderful father.

Papa and Esperanza show love for each other. For example, Papa gives esperanza the honor to cut the first bunch of grapes, because she is his "only child and pride and glory". Also, when Papa didn't come back for a long time, Esperanza grew very worried.

Two words that describe Esperanza are frustrated and angry.I think Esperanza is frustrated and angry because when Mama said"he is just a little late."(meaning Papa is just a little late.) Esperanzna was scolding Papa in her mind. So she was angry at him for being late. When Esperanza said"Mama, the neighbors warned him just last night about the bandits."It showed her being frustrated because she wanted him to be home and he wasn't.She was also frustrated because she was wondering why Papa wasn't home and when he was going to get home.Esperanza relys on Papa.An exapmle of her relying on Papa is when she expects him to give her a porcelain doll for her birthday. She also expected him to be waiting for her to wake up on her birthday under her window and at sunrise along with the other men that lived on the ranch to sing happy birthday for her.

The first word that describes Esperanza is greedy because she was always talking about herself. Also she got whatever she wanted.
She was also negative because she thought she had "bad luck" by the thorn that pricked her in the finger and blood started coming out. One word that describes Esperanza is supersticious. I think this because she immediatly thought she had bad luck when she cut her palm. Onther word is snotty. My reasoning is she thought it was the roses fault when she cut her finger. But you can still tell she cares about important people in her life like her momma papa who unfourtantly died and Miguel her childhood friend.

One character trait that describes Esperanza is spoiled because she gets whatever she wants like money, servants and crops. Also, she stole beef jerky from Papa that the cattlemen had made. I know this because, on page 9, it says,"Sometimes he even brought beef jerky that the cattlemen had made, but Esperanza always had to find it first, searching his shirt pockets while he hugged her." In the beginning of chapter 2, Papa trusts Esperanza to do something that usually the oldest son does. Because she is an only child and she is his pride and joy he gives her the honor of doing the job of cutting down the grapes. I know this because, on page 4, it says,"This job was usually reserved for the eldest son of a wealthy rancher, but since Esperanza was an only child and Papa's pride and glory, she was always given the honor."

I think that Esperanza is greedy because on page 9 it says "Sometimes he even brought beef jerky that the cattlemaen had made but,Esperanza always had to find it first."Also I think she is spoiled because she gets to wear beautiful dress' but all the workers on the ranch have to cover every thing. I know this because on page 5 it says "They were covered top to bottom, in long sleeved shirts, baggy pants tied with string, and bandanas wrapped around their foreheads toprotect them from the sun, dust and spiders." On the same page it says "Esperanza , on the other hand , wore a lightsilk dress that stopped above her summer boots, and no hat. On top of her head a wide satin ribbon was tied in a big bow, the tails trailing in her long black hair." I thought she stuck out from all the people around her because she was dressed up and thya were not.
