What is the effect of the strike on those workers still working?
Why does the author describe the incidents with the vegetable crates on page 202?
American workers are being sent back to Mexico because of their participation in the strike. Is this fair? Explain your answer.
Thanks, #1000

The effect of the strike on those workers who are still working is that there may be a possibility that they might be sent back to wherever too. I know this because on pg.210 it says, "We are lucky the company needs us right now. If they didn't, we could be next." The author describes the incidents with the vegetable crates on pg.202 to show that the strike was getting to be dangerous because someone could have gotten hurt. I know this because on pg. 202 it says, "It was a miracle that no one was bitten by that snake, said Hortensia that night at dinner." I do and don't think that it is fair that American workers are being sent back to Mexico because of their participation in the strike. Do explanation: I think this is fair because the people aren't supposed to strike and being sent back to Mexico is their punishment. Don't explanation: I don't think this is fair because the workers are just looking for money to help their family and the only possible way to get a raise is to strike. I mean the farm owners are probably swimming in money (sarcastic but you get my point)and not giving any of it to the people who are actually doing the work!! I wonder if Mama will die or survive. I wonder if Esperanza will have to go back to her uncles in Mexico because someone figured out Esperanza helped Marta. If that happens, Esperanza will have to live her life miserably in the evil, greedy and weird clutches of Tio Marco and Tio Luis.

Wow, #23!!! You always put in some pretty good description!
Here are my answers:
The main effect that the strike is putting down on those who still have jobs and homes
Oh, guys I'm sorry! I accidentally posted nothing!!
That was #20!
:( oops!
The strike is having an effect on the company workers by brining them added fear. " We are lucky the company needs us right now."(p. 210) is the only thing that keeps them from being captured and sent back to Mexico. The author described the events at the crates to tell about the horrors of the 1930's in the immigrant work camps. I don't think what the officals are doing is fair because they are american citizens and they have the freedom of speech. It's not like the Declaration of Independence just doesn't apply to the U.S. during the great depression! Thanks #23 for the quote.

The strike effects people who are still working because they could loose their jobs too. Also, the stikers might threaten them to strike. (like Marta did.) Lots of people who come from Oklahoma,Texas, etc. need jobs. Very easily the camp could kick uot the workers and hire new ones, that won't take the risk of striking, because they know it could ruin everything. The author describes the vegetable inidents, because she wanted to show how desperate the people were to strike. They would risk someones life, to make a point! Well how did that work out?!?!?!?!? Lets just say most of them got sent to Mexico. That's not what their "evil plan" wanted to lead to. They are are just lucky no one got hurt, first they would probably get kicked out of the camp, then get sued for a Ba-jillion dollars, then sent to jail. What a life!!!
On page 208 it states,"Something seemed very wrong about sending people away from theire own "free country" because they had spoken their minds." For the first time, in a LONG time, I agree with Esperanza. I don't think it is fair to be knocked out of the country, but I think think there should be little punishment. It's not fair to treat people who have just expressed how they feel sooooooooo badly. They were probably dreaming about what it is like to be rich!!! Imagine if you had 5$ to live on, would you think about have a million $'s?!? Probably!!! It's okay to dream about something that you don't have, but no okay to express it so harshly, like threatening people...Marta!!!
I am wondering if Esperanza will have to strike, against her will. Will she have to leave Mama alone? Theres a saying, "A daughter needs the comfort of her mother in hard times" (there acutally no saying that says that, but I thought it would go nicely with this!!!)
#11
The effect of the strike on the still working workers is that they are afraid to work because of stuff put in the bins by the strikers. The author decsribes this incedent to tell you exactly what the srikers were doing. I do not think it is fair to send people to Mexico because America is a free contry and free contries do not boot people out for speaking their minds.

Here are my REAL answers:
Once again, the effect of the strike would be those who now have jobs, will soon lose them because so many people are coming and going from the camp where Anza and her friends now are. In my opinion, I'd rather live under the conditions of the camp, then in some sack in the middle of nowhere, where you make 2 cents a day for a family of 5!!! THAT is the effect! Really, there is ANOTHER consequence! Every person hurting them self, or even KILLED- by the scary animals that the poor campesina's have cruely put into the asparagas packages!!! That's NOT okay!
The author describes the 'incident' with the veggie crates, because she's explaining the duel between these two different types of people. They agree with their choice, not because it's their own, but it's simply the majority! It is TOTALLY fair that some workers are being sent back to Mexico, because of their striking option. This is because if their refusing, why should people waste THEIR time over fighting aout it? This must have been a very confusing era of time!!! #1000,
could you maybe add a second set of answers like you did one time? That'd be great!!! Keep up the good work guys! Excuse my accidental mess-up earlier!

One problem with the workers that are striking is that if they come in out of the road the guards will see them and get angry. They also have a possibilitie of getting sent out and away from camp so they
don't disturb the workers. But I'm not worried about that, I'm more worried about why the guards didn't send them away or anything!!
"it's a free country" said Miguel.
Besides the strikerds are careful.
As long as they stay near the road
and the gaurds don't see them do anything aggressive, then no, there's not much we can do. It's the same at the railroad. I pass
the picket lines every day, and listen to the yelling and the insults." (Page 203) I think that Pam told us the readers about the
snakes in the crates and the mice, and all the other things that crawl and slither. I think that the strikers put them in the crates to make the workers work harder. I think it isn't fair because people should have the right to protest and to fight for whats right. But by doing that, right now, it's just making life harder. That is just what they wanted, right? Remember earlier when Marta said that they should either join now, or have a hard life. Thats basically what she
ment! Speak for yourself! Esperanza has her own right to choose what side she is on. Right
now she has to deal with mama being sick, and the strikers!
Nice job everyone!!

The effect of the strike on the people who still work is they might be be sent back to Mexico, even if they're not from there. I know this because on page 210 it says "We are lucky the company needs ur right now. If they didn't,we could be next."The author describes the incidents with the vegetable crates to prove how the strikers will do anything to get better wages and housing for their families, even if it means risking lives. I know this because on page 202 where it says "It was a miracle that no one was bitten by that snake, said Hortensia that night at dinner."Also, I don't think it is right for the strikers to risk innocent workers' lives when it is the people in charge of the camp's fault for not raising the wages or giving better housing. It is not fair for the American workers to be sent back to Mexico because they are just speaking their mind's. I know this because on page 208 it says, "Something seemed very wrong about sending people away from their own "free country" because they had spoken their minds." I predict Esperanza will sacrifice the money orders to help a starving family.

The effect of the strike on the people still working is that they could lose their jobs. Also, they could be sent of the buses back to Mexico and Tio Luis and Tio Marco could find them and do.....well BAD THINGS!!! I know this because on page 210 it says, "We have been loyal to the company and the company will be loyal to us!" The author describes in incidents with the vegtable crates because the strickers are very upset about not getting paid enough. So, they will do WHATEVER it takes to get their way.....or so they thought. I do not think the workers should be sent back to Mexico because they are striking. I think this because EVERYONE has a right to say or express what they want.(I googled it.)
#22
The effect of the strike on the people that are still working is that now they might be sent to Mexico. I know this because on page 210 it says "We are lucky the company needs us right now. If they didn't, we could be next." The author described the incidents with the vegetable crates to show that the strikers didn't just keep yelling strike but they also did things to try to injure people who weren't striking. For example on page 202 it says "It was a miracle that no one was bitten by the snake." That proves that nonstrikers could of been bitten by the snake. I think that sending the strikers back to Mexico is a bad thing because it is not fair that some people can provide food for their families and others can't. I think the farmers should give the strikers a little more money so they can at least have shelter and food.I wonder if Esperanza will get sent back to Mexico if more people who will work for lower amounts of money come. Then she would go right back to her mean uncles.

Wow! Everyone is doing such a great job. I have to say that #11 did a fantastic job typing the comment- what an outstanding quote!
-#14:)
The effect of the strike for the workers is getting fired and being sent back to where they came from. I know this because on page 210 it says, "We are lucky the company needs us right now. If they didn't, we could be next." The author describes the incidents with the vegetable crates on page 202 because it puts the people striking in danger because someone could get killed. I don't think it's fair to be banned from the country just because you need a little money to help you're family survive. If Esperanza goes back to Mexico she will have to deal with the EVIL, EVIL, EVIL uncles!!!!!!!!!
#3
I think the effects of the strike on the workers still working is they have to have guards around the camp almost all the time and since Marta is still here once she is safe again she can threaten the workers even more. I think the author described the incident with the rattlesnake in the crate so readers would see that unlucky people can still have good things happen to them. (Or at least things better than being bitten by a rattlesnake). I think this is partially fair because no one should stop working and convince people (who have families, or don't) to refuse to work. I also think this isn't fair because even if people do bad things, they shouldn't be taken so far away from their families (especially without being able to say good bye or tell them). I am able to prove my answer with a quote from pages 208 and 209," But then she thought about Marta and her mother holding hands, and couldn't imagine being separated from each other. And besides, they were both citizens. They had every right to be here."
#4
The effect of the strike for the workers still at the company camp is that they are always being bullied about their choice not to strike. An example of this would be on page 201 where it says,"When the gaurd wasn't looking, one of the strikers picked up a rock and threw it at the woman, barely missing her head, and the workers all hurried toward the shed." I think the author described the incidents with the vegetable crates on page 202 to show the mean, tormenting things the strikers did to be threatening. No, I do NOT think it is fair that people are doing this to them because America is the place they should be if they want to be there and it is a free country no matter WHAT people choose to do- strike OR no strike!
-#14
I just want to say that whoever decided to send those people back to Mexico is such a JERK!!!
-#14
What a powerful statement #20 has made. I love you point and wish I thought of that!:)
-#14
Keep up the great work everyone!:)
-#14
Okay, I have a crazy prediction:
I think that in order to give Abuelita the money she needs to travel, Esparanza-(or Anza)- is going to give money to one of her father's friends throught the work camp-(because she meets him)- and her secretly brings the money back to Mexico.
-#14
Crazy prediction- I know! it is probably impossible!
-#14
The effect on the remaining workers is that they are afraid they could get sent too Mexico or, who knows where? The author chooses to describe this part with the vegatable crate because it shows how desperitaly in need these strikers really are!!! The proof of this statement is on page 208 where it says, "Something seemed really wrong about sending people away from their own "free country" because they had spoken their minds." I would have to agree with Esperanza that the strikers shouldn't be treated like this. Also they should at least have some kind of punishment for this terrible affair with all of the striking. I do not think it is fair to send these strikers back home just for speaking their mind; America is a free country you should be able to speak your mind! Free speech is a right granted in the Constitution of The United States of America! Thanks #11 for the quote:) Finally I have a wonder. I wonder, will the striking ever stop, or will it keep going and cause more problems????

The effect of the strike dawns upon the still working workers by making them have the possibility of geting fired and returning to mexico.Nice job Marta just nice.At least Esperanza will still have work to do as it says on page 210 "We are lucky the company needs us right now. If they didn't, we could be next."The incident with the crate is a problem because These people went from annoying to a threat to everyone. They almost killed people with the snake and badly cut them with the glass these strikers have gone way to far in their insanity to make a few extra dollars.I belived that sending strikers back to Mexico was wrong until the strikers went from protests to threats of death and almost living up to the threats. This is a great reson to send them back they are insane over the strike and pose a major threat to all around them.
#16
The effect on those workers who are not srtiking and actually working is that they could get sent back or they will just stay it's a 50 50 chance because Ezperanza's friends and family don't have real legal documents and the police may be watching for that but they have a camp that voted not to strike, the camp owner needs the people and on top of it all Esperanza's friends and family havn't caused any trouble. I know this because on pg 210 it says, "We are lucky the company needs us right now. The author describes the incidents with the vegetable crates so she can describe what the work for them is like.
American workers deserved to be sent to Mexico because they were messing with the goverment and causing trouble so it was fair for them to be sent back.
thanks for the quote #23.
#5
The effect to the other workers is they could loose their jobs because of the strikers. The author discribes the incidents to show the strikers hatered for the people who don't strike. Well this is fair and unfair. I say it is fair because they are causing many troubles to the goverment. I say it is unfair because some of them have never even seen a picture of mexico and they still send them to mexico! #10 $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ :)K
The effect of the strike on the people who are still working is that they could be fired because the company could think that they were in on the strike, and send them back to Mexico. The author describes the incident with the vegetable crates because it was important to show what measures the strikers were willing to go to get what they wanted. CRAZY NUTHEADS!!!!!!!!!! Well about the Americans getting sent back to Mexico for participating in the strike, my brain is fighting with itself. One part of me says yes it's fair because they are just as much at fault as anyone else, but the other part of me says, you shouldn't send them to Mexico they have never been there (probably), send them somewhere esle.

The effect of the strikers was that the workers were becoming scared and cautious about the danger of the strikers and that their on the verge to peaking on their strikes. The author describes the events at the crates to emphacize radicalness or radicality (Ihave no idea) of the strikers. It's not fair to send real American citezens to be sent back to Mexico, although they have every right, legally, to send illegal aliens back to their country because they snuck in.

The effect the strikers have on the workers who are still working,is that even though they did not do any thing they might get sent back for talking or even being around them.i know this because on page 210 it says;"We are lucky the company needs us right now.If they didn't , we could be nexy."The author discrribed the insident with the crates(page 202) because it showed how far the strikers would go and that they meant what they said.i know this because on page 202 it says;"It was a merical that no one was bitten by that snake."I do and don't think that the strikers should be sent back to mexico. MY heart and mind are at war. One says that they should not be sent back to mexico. They probably have never even been there and should just stay and be taught there lesson with out leaving there family behind. The other said THEY SHOULD GO, THEY ALMOST KILLED SOMEONE!!!

Everyone did great! But i think that #11 did absolutly amazing.

The effect of strike on those who are still working is that it is the strikers were upset with the workers still working. For example, they were throwing rocks and yelling at them. The author described the incidents with the vegetable crates because it was explaining how the broken glass and razor blades made the job to get the fruit out of the crate immpossible. I know this because on pg. 202 it says, " They found razor blades shards of glass in the field bins and the women, usually efficient and quick to unpack the asparagus, slowed down and were hesitant to grab vegetables from their boxes." It is not fair to be sent back to Mexico because standing up for better housing is ok.
#7
The workers effected by the strikers in many ways. The workers feel fearful and pressured by the strikers. The fear that they will be hurt by the strikers, who throw rocks at them and do other mean things. The author describes the incidents on page 202 because she is trying to show how forceful the strikers were. The author is also trying to show how some people get pressured into striking. One quote that proves my answer is on page 200 "When Esperanza saw their menacing faces, she wanted to run back to the safety of the camp, do laundry, clean diapers, anything but this." I do not think that anyone should be sent to back to Mexico. All of the strikers had the right to speak up and say that the landowners were unfair and that they wanted better conditions. The landowners don't have to agree with the strikers or do anything to make things better but they should at least listen. The strikers just wanted a better life and now they're being sent bakc and have to start all over again.

The effect of those workers who are working are that there may be a possibility that they might be sent back to Mexico. I know this because on page 210 it says"We are lucky the company needs us right now. If they didn't, we could be next." The author describes the incidents withe the vegetable crates on page 202 to show that things are dangerous and someone can get hurt or even killed. I don't think that it is fair that American workers are being sent back to Mexico because of the participation of the strike. I think this because maybe some of the worker didn't participate in the strike?
B21 : ) :0 :{
1)The strikers effected the workers by making them possibly lose their job. I can prove this because on page 210 it says,"We are lucky the company needs us right now. If they didn't, we could be next."
2)The author describes the vegetable crates on page202 to show, that the strikers would even put snakes and broken glass in the crates because they didn't strike.
3)I don't think that it's fair because, they probably have never even been to Mexico and they're getting sent to Mexico for striking. They also are looking for a way for more money to feed their families and for better houses. My proof is on page 200 the strikers yell,"Help us feed our children!"and,"We must all join togther if we are going to eat!"The farmers won't give it to them even though they probably have lot's of money so they send them to Mexico when they haven't even been their.

If the workers dont strike and keep working then the strikes aka(Marta and her friends) will huet the people that wont strike. The author described this because Marata and the strikers did this to them.I know this because on page 202 it sayz"When several of them heard a ratleing from beneath a pile of stalks, the spervisors took the entire crate out to the yard, dumped it,and found an angry rattle snake inside." I know this was Marta and the strikers because they said theyd ~*try*~ to hurt them. No, its not fair because the americans cant get sent ~*BACK*~ to Mexico if they never lived there! You cant get sent back to a place were you never been!!!!!!!!!

I do not think that is fair that American workers are being sent back to mexico is their punishment. My comment on this proving this is not fare because the workers are just looking for money to feed their family. If possible they will strike to rais a little more money.

the effect of the strike on those workers is that they could get sent back to mexico even if they didn't do a thing. I know this because on page 210 it said " We are lucky the company needs us right now. If they didn't, we could be next." the author describes the incidents with vegetables crates on page 202 to show the strike was getting worse and Even more dangerous because someone might have gotten hurt. I dont thing that it is fair if you are an American and you work in those camps you get sent to mexico if a strike gets to much out of hands or any other reason. If Esperanza was caught at that place at a wrong time she would be sent back probably which would be a bad ending of the book so no i don't think it is fair that any body can get sent back.
b2 :DH
The effect of the strike on those workers still working is that they could be sent back to Mexico, too. I know this because page210 it says, "We are lucky the company needs us right now. If they didn't, we could be next."
The author put when Esperanza finds Marta because Esperanza didn't want to help her and get caught and she didn't want Marta to get caught and be mad at Esperanza. I think this was important because it shows that Esperanza has to choose.
I think that being sent to Mexico when you don't even live there is unfair because if they have never lived there and have no place to go, what do they do?
B#5
The effect of the strike on the people still working is that there pay will go down. The author describes the incident with the vegetable crates on pg. 202 because even though Marta was mean to Esperanza but Esperanza was still nice to Marta. No I don't think that this is fair because they have never been to Mexico and they will have no family there to help them. Also I don't think that this is fair because it is a free country and they should not be sent back.

The effect on the strikers of the people still working is that they could be sent back to Mexico with the other strikers. I know this because on page 210 it says,"They went to every major grower and put hundreds of strikers on the buses," said Juan...."We are lucky the company needs us right now. If they didn't, we could be next." The author describes the incidents with the vegetable crates on page 202 to show that they will do anything to get higher wages and better housing. I think this is not fair because all they want is a little more money to help support there family and a little more room in there homes so everyone isn't squished in there house/tent.
B#11
1) The affect is that the strikers put snakes and things in the boxes. Also they were yelling a lot so it was realy loud for the workers.
2) The author descibes the incidents the incidents because it tells that the strikers were desturbing the workers.
3) I do not think it is fair because the strikers are just trying to make life better for themselves and the other mexican migrant workers. Also because they might be american citizens who have never even been to Mexico.
********#B20********
The effect is that the strikers are making the workers worried and hard for them to work. There is proof of this on page 201,"Esperanza's heart was still beating wildly as she and the women took there places to pack the asparagus." This shows that she was scared and worried. Also, on page 202, it says,They found razor blades and shards of glass in the field bins and the women, usually quick and efficient to pack the asparagus, slowed down and were hesitant to grab the vegetables from their boxes." This shows that the strikers were hurting the workers.
The author describes this part on page 202 because it shows how dangerous the strikers were to the workers. It shows also how the strikers were against the people who did not strike.
I don't think this is fair because if they are American citizens, they had all of the rights an American citizen had. This is also not fair because the workers have never been to Mexico so that means that you couldn't count them as Mexicans.
B13
The effect on the strike for those workers that are still working is fear. Somepeople striking could hurt them. Also the immagrational officers could send them bach too, ever though they are not strikers. The author described the vegtable crates because it is sometimes scary stuff in their. One time a striker put a snake in the box. Someone could have got hurt. I do not think it is fair. They should only get sent back if their papers were wrong. Or they did something very, very bad. If they are American citizens, they should defintly not go back. They have the freedom to speak. "But some of them are citizens said Esperanza. It doesn't matter. They are problems with the government." I got that on page 206
