Two major events that happened in the chapter are when mama and Esperanza left in the carriage and when Miguel told Esperanza that "The rich take care of the rich and the poor take care of those who have less than they have." (p. 79). I was surprised that even though Carmen was a poor widow with eight children, she gave two chickens to mama and gave money to the crippled woman, which implies Miguel's saying. What caught my attention is that even though Miguel was a servant, he has memories with papa like he was papa's son he never had which makes Esperanza think that Miguel might be stricken with grief over papa's death like her or mama.

Two major event in this chapter is that Esperanza and the others were hiding in a wagon, and on their way to Zacatecas for a new life. This is important because the author gave us the information on where they are going.Another event that is important is when Esperanza and Mama met Carmen(who lost her husband and has eight kids to feed!! What suprised me in this chapter was the Esperanza acted. To me it seemed that esperanza didn't know how to act. She didn't know wether to be happy on the trip or sad. Sometimes I think that Esperanza can be kinda rude. Page 79,"But why does Carmen need to take care of the beggar at all?" That is either rude, or it just popped out of her mouth!
The one above is #6

The 2 main events of the chapter are Esperanza and Mama finally leave Aguascalientes, Mexico. Miguel said something very poignant to Esperanza on page 79 "The rich take care of the rich and the poor take care of those who have less than they have." It was appauling that Carmen, being a less fortunate widow with EIGHT children, she was generous enough to give away TWO chickens to Mama and Esperanza. It is a nice trade, because Mama gave the woman money, something she needed now more than ever. Thats what caught my attention, Esperanza actually DOING something nice for once! Thats pretty impressive, for her. It was sweet, how much Miguel remembered Papa. He had memories to share, as if he were HIS father, too. Miguel is probably very sad, aswell, even though he was just his servant. That fact brings out Miguels caring side a little more.
Great job, 6. I see your point.

Thanks a lot for that quote on page 79, #12.

Two major events in the story are when Mama and Esperanza leave. Also when Miguel tells Esperanza that "The rich take care of the rich and the poor take care of those who have less than they have." (page 79)I was suprised that Esperanza would be such a greedy brat to say "Why does Carman have to take care of the begger at all" Which in my opinion is as selfish and stuck up as possible. My attention was caught that carman a poor widow with eight children gave two chickens to mama and gave money to the crippled woman. This is the utter oppisite of that brat Esperanza.

Two major events that happened in this chapter are that Mama and Esperanza finally left Aguascalientes, Mexico. AWAY FROM THE UNCLES!!!! Another major event that happened in this chapter is when Miguel says to Esperanza, " The rich take care of the rich and the poor take care of those who have less then they have." One thing that suprised me in this chapter is that even though Carmen is a poor, poverty-stricken, destitude women she still gave two chickens to Mama and gave money to a crippled lady on the floor of the train station.(pg.78,79) One thing that caught my attention is that Miguel loved Papa as is he was his real Dad. I know this because it explains a memory that Miguel had with Papa in this chapter; Miguel seemed cheereful in this memory.
#12 you had great description, guotes and vocabulary.
Overall- A+

One major event that happened in this chapter is that Esperanza, Hortensia and Mama are secretly put in a wagon filled with guava's. Another important event is that Mama meets Carmen, the woman that has 8 children and no husband. What surprised me in the chapter is that Esperanza acts so selfish and mean to all the poor people just because she was richer. I know this because on page 70 it says, "Mama looked at Esperanza. I don't think it would have hurt to let her hold it for a few moments. Mama, she is poor and dirty... said Esperanza. But Mama interrupted. When you scorn these people, you scorn Miguel, Hortensia and Alfonso. And you embarrass me and yourself." What a brat!!!!!!! One thing that caught my attention is that Alfonso and Miguel kept hopping off the train at every stop to wash something in some water. I wonder what it is. I think it might be something precious that will help them on the way. Thank you #12, #6, #20 and #16 for the idea about Carmen. You all had great writing too!

Two major events that happened in the chapter are that Mama and Esperanza leave in the carriage. Another is that Miguel told Esperanza, "The rich take care of the rich and the poor take care of those who have less than they have." (pg. 79.) I was surprised that even though Carmen didn't have much money she still gave them two chickens and money for the crippled woman. One thing that caught my attention was that Miguel had a lot of good memories with Papi but he wasn't took "stricken with grief" (#12.)

Two major events that happened in this chapter are when Esperanza gets in the dirty train. This is a major event because in Esperanza's life everything has always been clean and perfect. Then Esperanza gets in a train that is filthy and she is not used to filthy places. It states this on page 66 when it says "Trash littered the floor and it reeked of rotting fruit and urine." Another major event is when Esperanza, Mama, Hortensia, Alfonso and Miguel escape in the wagon to go to the train. Something that suprised me in this chapter is that Mama let Esperanza interact more with the poor. It states this on page 76 when it says "Esperanza hesitantly reached inside (the poor persons bag) and took out a square of coconut candy. Mama had never permitted her to take candy from someone she didn't know before, especially from a poor person." It caught my attention when Carmen gave the crippled women a coin and some tortillas. It states this on page 78 and 79 when it says "Carmen walked over and gave her a coin and some tortillas from her bag."
#25 :-)
Two major events that occur in this chapter are when Mama and Esperanza leave and the other major event is she also learns other people don't live like she used to. What surprised me in this chapter is that how generous Carmen was. For example, on page 78 it says, " Carmen gave Mama two chickens, in an old shopping bag that she tied with string. "For your future", she said." What caught my attention is how mean Esperanza was to the poor little girl by not letting her play with her doll.

Nice way to compare Carmen to Esperanza, #16
From, #17
Two major events that ocur are that Esperanza hides in the wagon, and Esperanza goes on a train to America. I was suprised that Mama told Carmen everything about the uncles when she was being so secretive before. What caught my attention is that Carmen gave money to the begger when she was so poor herself. I know this because on pg.78 it says "...but Carmen walked over and gave her a coin."
that last one was done by #1
I see your point #16. Well done!

Great job, #25! I like that you included that Esperanza's life was always "clean and perfect". I agree with you. That was surprising!

#7,
Great quote! I forgot to add it!

Two major events in this chapter are when Esperanza left in the carriage, and when Esperanza leaves to go to Zacatecas. What suprised me in this chapter was when Esperanza was even more SNOTTY AND STUCK-UP then before!!! I know this because on page 70 it states,"Mama she is poor and dirty..." Who cares about how someone looks, it matters what they are like on the inside. What caught my attention in this chapter was when Esperanza and Mama have to go on the train with the "peasents" and Esperanza was being a total brat. (which doesn't really suprise me.)
The one before was #11!!
Before I type my comment I just want to thank the following people for the great description of the dirty train, the old, crippled woman, and the poor woman with eight children:#12,#6,#20,#16,#23,#24,#25,#7,#1, and someone who forgot their number!
The last comment was done by #14!
#20 had great answers to the question. NICE WORK!!!!!

The two major events that occur in this chapter are that Mama, Esperanza, and Alfonso's family sneak away during the night in a wagon, and they take a train to Zacatecas. What surprised me in this chapter is how Carmen is poor but she still gives what she has to anyone who has even less. Proof of this is on page 79 where it says "She has eight children and sells eggs to survive. Yet when she can barely afford it she gave your mother two hens and helped the crippled woman, said Miguel." What caught my attention in this chapter was Miguel was almost like the son Papa never had. Miguel showed his grief for Papa's death just as much as the Ortega's did. So, in that matter, Miguel is like family to the Ortega's. I know this because on page 75 where it says "It dawned on her that even though Miguel was a servant, Papa may have thouhgt of him as the son he never had."I have noticed that Esperanza really needs some help on respecting others.

Good job #16

Great comments everyone. I'm getting a lot of reading done for the read-a-thon. There are so many comments!
I agree,#11. Esperanza is even worse then before just because she has to be near poor people.
From, #17
Two major events that happened in this chapter are when Esperanza and her mother were hiding in the carrage in case Tio Luis came and found them. Also, when Miguel said something very important on page 79it says,"the rich take care of the rich and the poor take care of those who have less than them." wich means that Miguel can't marry Esperanza. What surprised me is that Esperanza went from rich to poor in such short time. It was like papa dies and the next thing you know your poor. What caught my attention is that Miguel had some good times with papa too. It seemed like Miguel was papa's son and papa was Miguels father. A comment that I have is that Esperanza was a brat and then she isn't. Her father dies and then she gets nicer and than her house burns down she gets nicer. Finally, when she has to move to a diffrent country she actually gets nicer because she offers to help farming in California.

Two major events that occured in this last chapter-(Las Guayabas)- are first, the suspensful scene in the wagon while Esparanza and the others hid and second, the long and weary train ride. First of all, there were two things that shocked me- Miguel actually talked to Esparanza after his long time of being silent and that Esparanza was SO rude to the little peasant girl. I mean- I KNOW that Esparanza has ALWAYS been a two-face BRAT but I DID NOT think she would make a BIG deal out of a DOLL!!! Also it caught my attention that Mama was sharing what was happening to them to the woman with eight kids because Esparanza clearly was confused and surprised with Mama's decision as to talking about their troubles. I'm surprised too because I didn't know Mama would be so opened to talking to people "lower" than her. I know this because on pg.76 it says," Soon, Mama was confiding in Carmen, telling her all that had happened with Papa and Tio Luis...She was amazed at how easily Carmen had plopped herself down and had plunged into a intimate conversation. It didn't seem correct somehow. Mama had always been so proper and concerned about what was said and not said."
I basically stated all my thoughts so I don't need to make any more comments.

Wow! I got 47 minutes in for the read-a-thon! 13 more to go!:)

Nice job, #8. I liked your statement about Esparanza going from rich to poor in such a short time. I don't think I looked at it that way!

There has been so many outstanding comments from everyone and they all are descriptive and use good quotes!:)

Two major events that occur in this chapter are when they (Esperanza's family) are riding to the train station and Esperanza being told by Miguel that she is now one of the poor people in the world. It surprised me in this chapter that Carmen is very poor and she still gave a begger money. She seemed so sweet. It caught my attention that Miguel was telling Esperanza about poor people and rich people already. "The rich take care of the rich and the poor take care of those who have less than they have." (page79) I thought Esperanza was really snobby and selfish when Mama was being so nice to Carmen because on page 77 Esperanza said, "Do you think it is wise to tell a peasant our personal business?... It's all right Esperanza, because now we are peasants, too... Esperanza ignored Mama's comment. What was wrong with her?" I find it extremely snobby of Esperanza.

Two major events in this chapter are that Esperanza and the others ride the leave in the carrage. Also when Miguel said to Esperanza, "The rich take care of the rich and the poor take care of those who have less than they have."(page 79) What really surprised me was that Carmen gave the crippled Indian woman a coin and tortillas. Ths surprised me because Carmen is poor. The rich turned there backs of the woman but Carmen was nice enough to give to her. It caught my attention that Esperanza JERKED AWAY her doll when a LITTLE GIRL went to touch it. HOW COULD SOMEONE BE SO LOW AS TO SNATCH AWAY FROM A LITTLE GIRL!! On page 69 I read, "Esperanza quickly jerked it away and put it back in the valise, covering it with the old clothes." When i read this is broke mt heart! The little girl is just like Esperanza. (poor) But Esperanza thinks she is better then other people even when they are the same.

I agree with you #4!!!!
#22:) :)
Thanks everyone for all of your ideas!

I think #22 and #4 had good points about Carmen. I think she is sweet, also!

Two major events that happened in the chapter were when mama met carmen and she gave two chickens to mama. Another major event in this chapter is when miguel said to Esperanza the rich take care of the rich and the poor take care of those who have less than them pg79.
The thing that surprised me in this chapter is that carmen take's care of other's when she can't take care of herself.
Something that caghtches my attention is mama breaks her own rules about talking and giving to the poor.
I think carmen is agreat person to take care of others thanks for the the idea's #12.

Wow! Nice job #5!

Two magor events are Esperanza and mama escape the other one is Esperanza finally is starting to realize she is a peasant herselfe. I know this because on page 77 it says "Mama tried not smile. She whispered back, It is all right Esperanza because now we are peasants too. One thing that surprised me was how Esperanza was wondering what she was doing in the dirty smelly car. I cant believe how much of a brat she is. One thing that caught my attion is when Esperanza was in the car and the little girl came up and touched Esperanza's doll she freaked out and made a little girl cry. I have one connection to when Esperanza and mama make the doll for the little girl. When I lived in Japan I would ride the subway alot and sometimes there would be some beggers with children and I would give the children all the little children every toy I had in my backpack. # 10
The person who packed my backpack forgot to pack my book so i could not read
:(
sorry one above is 18
two major events in this chapter are that esperanza will not give the poor girl the dool, put i understand that papa gave her the doll. Last, it was nice that mama made the girl a doll of yarn. Also another event is that they ge gt on a train and go to California. Something that surprises me is that the lady gave mama the in chickens when she was poor. some thing that caught my attention is that the poor lady gave to the poorer lady.
