The swimming pool incident was similar to the incident in "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" because both events someone was treated better than someone because of their backround, and by that I mean their descent. Miguel talks about working harder than everybody else. I know this because on page 223 it says, "Maybe I must be more determined than others to succeed, but I know that it will happen." My opinion of Esperanza's comments to Miguel was that she spoke the truth, saying that he should stick up for his talents, well I thinkk that he definately should. If he can do that job better than the "Okies" he should have the chance to do that job. But later in the chapter Esperanza feels bad about her comments because Miguel leaves to find better work in Northern California. I think Miguel stole the money orders, I think this because it would make sense, I mean he would need money to get to up north and get a place if he actually gets a job.

The swimming pool comment by Hortensia is similar to the book incident in Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry because In both incidents,the people surrounding the main characters are treating the main characters like dirt because they are just different. But really, they are all human beings and should not treat each other like dirt.I'm not sure if I am right when I say this but I think Miguel's strategy to talk about how to avoid being a second class citizen is to talk about the other side of the river thing and that now that he's in California there's a tiny hope that he could do better now that he's not a servant.(sorry about the run on sentence)Even though, Esperanza was really confused, angry and sad, I still think Esperanza's comments to Miguel were pretty hurtful. I mean, she started to act like the brat she used to be!!!!!!!!!! Later in the chapter, Esperanza blames herself for Miguel going somewhere else in California to look for work and she feels bad about what she told Miguel. I know this because on pg.232 it says, "Mama, Miguel is gone, she whispered. I know, Mija. Hortensia told me. But Mama, it was my fault. I got angry and told him he was still a peasant and then he left."This proves my answer because it tells you Esperanza is blaming herself for what she told Miguel. I think Miguel took the money orders because he was mad at Esperanza and took them to wherever he went. Or, Pam Ryan is just a great author and tries to trick us and maybe Miguel didn't. Now that is something to think about!

The proof of this statement is on page 223 where it says, " Maybe I must be more determined than others to succeed, but I know that it will happen." I don't think Esperanza's comments to Miguel were very nice because they are now both on "the same side of the river", and one is not more important than the other. Esperanza's cruel words were, " No! You are still a peasant." Later in the chapter Esperanza actually feels bad about her inconsiderate response to Miguel earlier. I agree with #24. I think Miguel stole the money orders because he would need the money to start a new life in California. I wonder, will Miguel ever come back?

The swimming pool incedent is similar to roll of thunder because a different race of people get something better than another race of people just because of their race. Miguel talked about being "more determined than others to succeed," but Anza just shot that strategy down with her real life aspect about their race. I think what Anza said to Miguel was harsh, but she spoke the truth. Anza felt pretty bad a bit later about crushing one of Miguel's biggest hopes and dreams. I think Miguel took the money orders to get back at Anza.

(People were getting treated differently because of their backrounds.) The strategy that Miguel talks about to avoid becoming a second class citizen was that he talked about how Esperanza had told him about living on two different sides of the river. Also, he is talking about having a second chance to become more than he was. I know this because on page 222 it states, "At least here, I have a chance, however small, to become more than what I was." This proves that Miguel is trying to be more than a second class citizen. My opinion of Esperanzas comments to Miguel was that she should not have let them slip out. Maybe she could have said them in a nicer way. But some of her comments were NOT nessisary. They were so hurtful to Miguel that he ran off to northern California. Later in this chapter Esperanza feels terrible about what she said and that is was ALL her fault for making Miguel go to California. I think that Miguel took the money orders because how else would he get all the way to California. It's not like he hahs a pile of cash laying around...but apparently Esperanza did!

rude!! People can't just judge someone by their look. They should be shown some respect. In Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry they all got dirty used, floppy, and innapropriate, used books. (I wouldn't even call them books!!) Then what you know, here in Esperanza Rising the Ortega's get treated like a sack of potatoes! Just because their mexicans! else. But in Esperanza's point of view Miguel is still a lazy boy that acts like a second class citizen. Here is a quote that proves my answer. Page 222 "Miguel,
do you not understand, ou are still a second class citizen because you act like one, letting them take advantage of you like that." I would have to agree with almost everything Anza said to Miguel. Miguel should've pushed himself a little harder to be where he wanted to be. Work doesn't just come to you like a mosquito would. I would have to admitt that I never really felt comfortable reading about Miguel.

I skipped question #1 I didn't read that book.
I think that Miguels strategy to avoid becoming a second class citizen is when he says in Mexico that he was on the other side of the river but here he at least has a chance to find work because he is not a slave. My opinion of Esperanza's coments to Miguel is that they were hurtful. Esperanza and Miguel are both on the "same side of the river" and Esperanza still treats Miguel badly. Esperanza regrets her coments to Miguel when she says "Mama, Miguel is gone, she whispered. I know, Mija. Hortensia told me. But Mama, it was my fault. I got angry and told him he was still a peasant and then he left"(on page 232). I think that Miguel took the money orders so he could start his new life that he talked about. I wonder if Miguel is really going to leave the family?

The "swimming pool incident" is similar to Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry because it is basically segregation to build a pool and give hot water to a camp full of Okies and only let Mexicans swim the day before they clean it. The strategy Miguel talks about to avoid being "second class people" is working very hard so the employers will promote him and he will not be considered second class. I think Esperanza's comments were extremely unnecessary and mean (even if they were true). I think Marta stole the money orders because at the beginning of the story Marta was so mean and obnoxious. "Esperanza stood frozen for a moment, remembering Marta's meanness that first day in the truck. If she helped her and someone found out, Esperanza would be on the next bus herself." (page 208). (I know this is the last chapter but I thought it would work.) This proves my answer because it says that Marta was mean. Also, Marta somehow could have known that the deporting people were coming and made a plan. I don't know why or how, but it is very possible.

Other people think the Mexicans are so dirty that they have to use the pool last Plus it's the day before they clean it anyway. This is similar to "Roll Of Thunder Hear My Cry" because because all the blacks were treated like the Mexicans now. The stratedgey Miguel talks about to avoid becomeing a second class citizen is remebering that he used to be even more worthless than he is now. Like when on page 222 when it says " In Mexico I was a second class citizen. I stood on the other side of the river remember? And I would of stayed that way my intire life. Miquel talks about "waiting a little while for the fruit to fall into your hand." Papa said this a lot, so it probobly means somthing. I think Esperanza was an complete snob when she told Migel he was a peasent. I know this because on pg.224 it says, "You are still a peasent!" This proves my answer because it tells you Esperanza told Migel he was a peasent. I think Migel took the money orders. I think this because Miguel dissapeared and the money orders dissapared. The swimming pool incident was like the book event in "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" because it shows, back then, if you were from a different country, or different race, you get treated differently. Which, now-a-days, is strictly against the law. Mexicans were only aloud to swim in the pool hours before it got cleaned because the camp owners think Mexicans are dirtier or don't have the prevlige of swimming in the pool. I know this because on page 221 it says,"'Have you heard that they are building a new camp for the Okies, with a swimming pool? The Mexicans are only aloud to swim in it before they clean it!'"
I think this was really unfair because if you come from a different background, that doesn't mean you should be
treated any worse than a person from a different background!!!
Miguel talks about fufilling his dream to become more than a second-
class citizen. He says that, even by a small change, he is one step farther away from being a second-class citizan by working on the railroad. I think by chasing his dream, Miguel is the highest person he could be within himself.
I think the jerky comments that Esperanza said to Miguel were abousolutley horrendis. She was being a shallow brat. You know
Esperanza, you were really becoming a normal person, but then you ruined it all by saying those words that almost collasped Miguel cofindence. I am not kidding, what is wrong with you, Esperanza? Seriously!
Esperanza feels guilty of what she said to Miguel, and she's gonna have to live with that guilt because she crushed Miguels feelings!!! She should learn how to control her animal-like temper or she's gonna have to learn the lesson the hard way.
I think a family member, most likely Miguel took the money orders because he wanted revenge at Esperanza, and he needed money. I think that was stupid of Miguel because two wrongs don't make a right, and revenge doesn't solve anything. It just ruins people's friendships.

The incident had to do with Roll of Thunder because In Roll of Thunder the whites said to the blacks no coming here your black we only allow whites.While with the pool your mexican only Americans are aloud to swim.Miguel talks about how he wants and plans to suceed on page 223 "Maybe I must be more determined than others to succeed, but I know that it will happen."Anza had one good point in what she told Miguel.She basicly said to stick up for himself and get the "Okies" to go back to their old turf.He was great with train engiens while Mr.Oakie will most likely blow the whole thing up!Anza feels bad about her comments because Miguel storms off to the north all because of her.Miguel probably stole the money orders because he needs money but only has like 30 cents in his wallet so why not take to orders.

They were raciest-(and VERY wrong)- about their way of treating others and that connects with "the swimming pool incident" because Hortensia said that "the Mexicans could only come on one afternoon the day before they clean the pool".(Page 218.) I think Esparanza was a jerk to Miguel when she said he was "a peasant" because just because he didn't have as much money, clothing, food, etc...doesn't mean she has to remind him! Esparanza feels guilty later in this chapter because she thinks it was her fault he left. As crazy as it sounds, I think Miguel took the money orders when he left for revenge. The swimming pool in this book and the textbook incident in "Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry" because in both books some people were treated unfairly because of their skin color.In "Roll of Thunder,Hear my Cry", the black students recieved books only when they were old, worn, and out of date as to when in "Esperanza Rising" when the Mexicans can only swim in the pool when it was at it's dirtiest.
Miguel says to keep on persevering and stay determined. He also says that in America he hes some hope of becoming more than a second-class citizen. I know this because on page 222 it says,"At least here I have a chance, no matter how small, to become more than I was." This also shows that Miguel is optimistic.
Although I think that Esperanza is right, that they were not being treated fairly, and that he should speak up, I still think that Esperanza was being mean for taking out her anger and frustration on Miguel. Later, however, she feels bad about this, when Miguel leaves. I think she feels ashamed and guilty for making everyone feel worried and anxious. I think this because on page it says,"Esperanza was too ashamed to tell anyone what was said in the vineyard annd she secretly knew Miguel's leaving was her fault."
I think that Miguel took the money orders because the day after he disappeared the valise was empty besides the doll. I know this because on page 227 it says,"Esperanza bent down, pulled her valise from her bed, and opened it. The only thing left inside was the porcelain doll." Although Esperanza might not have noticed it, this shows that the valise was empty.

4)Everyone in the class knows what happened because we read that part but here's my answer. I think Miguel took the money to go get Abuelita for mama and Esperanza. He took Esperanza's money because she saved up for it and that's what she wanted to spend her money on and nothing else.

In "Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry" the African-Americans get worse conditions just like the Mexicans. Miguel's straategy is to not give up and have hope that he can become something more, because he now has a chance. My opinion about Esperanza's comments is that I see what she is saying and in some ways I agree and some ways I don't. I agree that standing up for what you believe in is not bad but that waiting for a chance is not bad either. Esperanza feels gguilty about her comments later on in this chapter. But in "Esperanza Rising", the whites still got all the respect, but anyone that was Mexican, Spanish, Chienese, or black didn't nearly get as much respect as the whites because the land owners thought they were only good for manual labor. the strategy Miguel talks about to avoid being a second class citizen is not to strike because this way they won't be sent to camps in even worse conditions for them to live in. My opinion about Esperanza's comments to Miguel was very mean because they are now on the same side of the river and Esperanza said some hurtful things about Miguel's side of the river. I think Esperanza feels bad about her comments because now she is on the the same side as him so she realizes why the things she said were hurtful. I think Miguel stole the money orders because when he was discovered missing, the money orders as well were missing too. A quote that will prove my answer is on page 227 it says "the only thing left was the porcelain doll". This shows me that the money orders were missing.
This is similar because in both books they are ttreated unfair.I think Esperanzas comments to miguel were kinda mean, and i can tell miguel was hurt by Esperanzas mean words. I know this because on page 224 is sayz "With eyes as hard as green plums, Miguel stared at her and his face contorted into a disgusted grimace..." I can tell that Miguel also got a little mad at Esperanza.To avoid talking about becomeing a second class citizen Miguel always talked about the different sides of the river thing because now both Esperanza and Miguel are second class citizen as before Esperanza was a frist class citizen.I think Esperanza feels bad now that Miguel found work in northern California.(This question is sort of piontless cuz we know what happened to all the money oders!!!!)I predict that Miguel get Abulita for Esperanza and Mama.

1) The swimming pool incident in Esperanza Rising is similar to the book incident in Roll of thunder, Hear My Cry because in both books the darker skinned people were treated unfairly because in Roll of Thunder, Hear my cry the white people didn't give the black people the books until they were in bad shape and in Esperanza Rising the Mexicans could only use the pool the night before they cleaned it witch proves that the Americans thought that the Mexicans were dirty.
2) Miguel talks about him and Esperanza being on the same side of the river now to avoid becoming a second class citizen because everyone in the migrant camps were second class citizens so they were all the same. Miguel also says that since everyone is the same that there is more hope that he will become more than just a servant.
3) My opinion about Esperanza's comments to Miguel is that they were rude and made Miguel feel bad because he thought that Esperanza thought of him still being a servant and her still being a queen witch is not true because if Miguel was a servant then they should both be servants and if Esperanza was a queen then they should both be queens because now they are living the same way and have the same staus.
4) Esperanza probrilbly feels bad about her comments because they were rude to Miguel and she even addmited to mama that it was her fault that Miguel left.
5) I think Miguel took the money orders so that he could get Abulita to Esperanza and ma mama and to help him pay for transportation so that he could find a job. #B20
The "swimming pool incident" is like "Roll of Thunder Hear my Cry", because it is basically segregation. This is not fair because they are basically calling Mexicans second class citizens. Miguel talks about working harder so they are not second class citizens. I know this because on pg. 223 it says, "Maybe I must be more determined then others to succeed,but I know that it will happen. I think that Espernazas comment was true but mean. I think this because if Miguel thinks that he is improving and feels like he is then she should let him believe that because she doesn't know. Esperanza feels bad that she told him all that because she feels like its her fault for him running away. I think that Miguel took them to get Abulita for Esperanza. I think this because that is what Esperanza was going to do with it anyway.

Hortensia's comment about the swimming pool is similiar to the incident in "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" because the characters surrounding the main characters treat the main characters like they are a piece of dirt. The strategy that Miguel talks about to avoid becoming a second class citizen is that he talks all about how he used to be on the other side of the river, but since he lives in California now, he isn't a peasent anymore. My opinion of Esperanza's comments to Miguel was that they were really mean and hurtful to him. I thought Esperanza was a whole different person since she lived in Mexico, but I guess she still had a little bit left of being mean and greedy inside of her. I think Esperanza feels sad about her comments because she drove away one of her best friends she ever had. I know this because on page 232 it says,"Mama, Miguel is gone." she whispered. "I know, mija, Hortensia told me." "But Mama, it was my fault. I got angry and told him he was still a peasent and then he left." I think Miguel took the money orders to get Abuelita.

The stradedgy Miguel talk about to avoid being a second class citizen is "Wait a little while and the fruit will fall into your hand."Miguel's stategy shows that he never gave up and he doesn't want to be a migrant worker who digs ditches,so he is going to try something new.
My opinion of Esperanza's comments to Miguel is that the comments that she told Miguel pushed him to go to Northern California to look for better work.
Later in this chapter Esperanza feels guilty about her comments to Miguel.She feels guilty because she feels responsible for making Miguel leave.Esperanza also feels guilty because Miguel going to Northern California by himself indangered his saftey and Esperanza would feel responsible if anything happened to him.
I think Miguel took the money orders to bring Abulita to Esperanza and Mama so Mama wouldn't be depressed any more.A quote that proves my answer is on page 233 when it says"She opened the bag and her mouth dropped opened.She couldn't belive what she saw.She tipped the valise up-side down and shook it hard.It was empty.The money orders were gone."

I think Miguel tryed to save some money but used all of it for his ticket to Las Angelas and Abuelitas ticket from Mexico to there so he did want to save money.

The swimming pool comment made by Hortensia is very similar to the text book incident in the book “Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry” because they are both about racism. The camp owners don’t want the Mexican people swimming until the water is dirty. They expect the Mexican people to pollute the water. The same thing happened in “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” when the school district gave disgusting books to an all black school, thinking that that was all they deserved and that they would ruin them anyway. Both incidents made people on the receiving end feel horrible. Both of these actions occurred in times when segregation was very common, so it is likely that real people experienced things like this everyday. Miguel’s strategy for avoiding becoming a second class citizen is to always work hard. If you stay motivated, certain opportunities will present themselves and you will be able to make a better life for yourself. Miguel also believes that staying hopeful will help you to get through any hard times, which will, in turn, help you to have a better life and become a higher class citizen. I know this because on page 222 Miguel says “…At least here, I have a chance, however small, to become more than what I was…” That means that Miguel will stay hopeful and determined. Esperanza says that Miguel is wrong, and that they need to take action so they may be treated fairly. My opinion of this is that she is right, but wrong at the same time. The way the migrant workers are treated is very bad, so she is right to say that. But she also needs to give Miguel’s strategy a chance. She must be patient when dealing with these things. I think that both strategies work, and that Esperanza shouldn’t discount one. She was angry and spiteful when she said those hurtful things. I know this because on page 224 when Miguel said “And you still think you are a queen.” This is clearly retaliation to Esperanza’s negativity and judgmental attitude. My opinion is that Esperanza was wrong in her accusations of Miguel, for clearly he doesn’t deserve them. Later in the chapter, Esperanza feels sorry about what she said. That feeling is increased when Miguel leaves on mysterious pretenses. Esperanza thinks it happened because of what she said. I know this because on page 232, Esperanza says “But Mama, it was my fault. I got angry and told him he was still a peasant and then he left.” This shows that Esperanza is very upset with herself for what she said to Miguel. I think that Miguel took Esperanza’s money orders to help him get Abuelita from Mexico. Miguel knew that is what Esperanza wanted, and he would have been able to take the money orders without her noticing. He would not steal them for personal gain; he is just not that kind of person. But he did have access to them so my guess is that he would do something useful with that money. A quote that proves my answer is on page 223, “Anza, everything will work out.” Miguel is probably trying to make Esperanza see that if you try, everything will get better.

The swimming pool comment is the similar to the book "Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry" because they are both seperated. They get to swim in the pool last because they think they are dirty. Just like Cassie and her class got the books after the white kids used them. The books were all torn up. The strategy Miguel talked about to avoid becoming a second class citizen is to work harder than everyone else. Someone could notice you, it they do you can be moved up to a higher job. I think Esperanza acted like a jerk to Miguel. She shouldn't call him a peasant, she owns the same amount of stuff as him. She was so mean to him she made him leave. That is the most common way, they fight one night and the next day he left. I got this on pg. 224 and 225 it says, " Look at yourself. Are you standing on the other side of the river? NO! You are still a peasant...... The next morning, Miguel was gone." Later in the chapter Esperanza feels bad. She even prays that Miguel is safe, and will stay safe. I think Miguel stole the money orders. He was really mad at Esperanza, that was his way to get back at her. Also he needed to have some money to travel.

This incident is similar to the one in Roll of Thunder because it was degrading not only to one person but to a whole race. Miguel says that to avoid being a second class citizen is to always have hope and be more determined than others to get what she wants. My opinion of Esperanzas comment is that she was completely telling the truth. In the way she's looking at it the strikers were definitely right although they were a bit more extreme than necessary. Later in the chapter she feels bad about how mean she was when she yelled at him. She might have been able to be a bit more sensitive than going all-out like that. Of course we know what happens because we're finished but I would have guessed that Miguel did this anyways. I would have known because when Miguel leaves he would need money to support himself and that would be enough.

Esperanza regrets her comments later in this chapter because on page 232,"Mama, Miguel is gone, she whispered. I know, Mija. Hortensia told me. But Mama, it was my fault. I got angry and told him he was still a peasant and then he left."
I think the money orders were taken by Miguel to go get Abulita because Miguel was realizing that Esperanza was getting stressed.

Hortensia's comment about the swimming pools reminded me of "Roll of Thunder,Hear My Cry" because in both books, people are treated with less respect and have less privileges if their skin is darker than an American person.For example, Esperanza could only swim in the pool when it was it's dirtiest and the Okies got to swim in it everyday. Cassie and her brothers got the books only after they had been through the hands of many white children, making them ripped, stained and almost unreadable.Miuel's strategy to aviod becoming a second class citizen is to try harder and be more determined than others and to know and believe and pray that something good will happen.I think that because Esperanza was tired and angry, her words came out as something more harsh.Overall, I think she was right, but she was too forceful in getting her piont across.I think that Miguel's comment of "You,obviously, can never understand this because you have never lived without hope."(page 222)is very harsh and not true at all because with all the things that happened to her you'd think she'd have lost hope at least a little bit.What does he think she's doing now?She has barely no nope at all.Esperanza feels very bad about saying those things to Miguel, all though he is still just a peasant, she is too.She blames herself for his disappearance,but maybe he planned to leave anyway,sometimes,it is a pity you can't read people's minds.I think that their fight tempted him to take her money orders.I believe that Miguel took the money orders to get to California, but also to get Abuelita so she can help Mama get better.This is very noble thinking.
